From the Bridge Pastor

The Gospel reading for All Saints Day is Luke 6:20-31. This is the reading from the Contemporary English Version: “Jesus looked at his disciples and said: God will bless you people who are poor. His kingdom belongs to you! God will bless you hungry people. You will have plenty to eat! God will bless you people who are now crying. You will laugh! God will bless you when others hate you and won't have anything to do with you. God will bless you when people insult you and say cruel things about you, all because you are a follower of the Son of Man. Long ago your own people did these same things to the prophets. So when this happens to you, be happy and jump for joy! You will have a great reward in heaven. But you rich people are in for trouble. You have already had an easy life! You well-fed people are in for trouble. You will go hungry! You people who are laughing now are in for trouble. You are going to cry and weep! You are in for trouble when everyone says good things about you. That is what your own people said about those prophets who told lies. This is what I say to all who will listen to me: Love your enemies and be good to everyone who hates you. Ask God to bless anyone who curses you and pray for everyone who is cruel to you. If someone slaps you on one cheek, don't stop that person from slapping you on the other cheek. If someone wants to take your coat, don't try to keep back your shirt. Give to everyone who asks and don't ask people to return what they have taken from you. Treat others just as you want to be treated.”
The reading is not a rant against wealthy people…it is a warning to wealthy people who ignore the poor, who treat them as second-class citizens, who consider themselves to be more worthy of good things. It demonstrates God’s love for the “underdog.”
This particular reading is often considered to be a lesson on a great reversal. God’s sense of fairness is not necessarily the same as human’s sense of fairness.
I have been asked to consider leading a Bible study at Pierce Street Coffee Works. I really enjoy leading Bible studies and would be pleased to do this while I am with you. There is a
On a personal note, this coming Sunday is my favorite Sunday in the entire year! Why? Because Daylight Savings Time ends and we gain an hour of sleep!!!

On another personal note, Jane and I had a wonderful time in Arizona on our vacation! Neither of us has visited there before and we saw so many beautiful sights in the mountains and deserts. I had no idea there were so many different varieties of cacti! We especially enjoyed meeting friends who now live out there and even got into Mexico!
Now I’m back, refreshed, and ready to continue my work as your Bridge Pastor. Blessings to you all.

As always, if you are someone you know would benefit from a pastoral visit, please call the office, and let Michael or me know.

In Christ,
Pastor Del
Hy-Vee Receipts

It is time to save Hy-Vee receipts again for the schools to cash in and get monies for extra things that the school budgets cannot provide. The balloon box will be on the table outside the office and receipts dated beginning in August can be deposited there. I will get them to the schools for their sorting and calculating. They cannot accept receipts for gas or prescriptions but all receipts for other items are acceptable. This is a very simple way to help our neighbors, so start
collecting and bring them to church. If you have any questions, please contact me.
