Polish American Heritage Month 2021

Throughout the month of October, the United States celebrates Polish American Heritage Month. The first celebration of Polish American Heritage was held in August of 1981, after being organized by Michael Blichasz, then President of the Polish American Cultural Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Following this initial celebration, there was lobbying done on both the state and national level to solidify August as this celebratory month. House Resolution 577 was passed in 1984, which officially made August the month during which we honor the culture and heritage of Polish immigrants who came to America.

In 1986, the celebratory month was moved to October. This change was made to commemorate the very first Polish Settlers who came to the Jamestown Colony in 1608. The change was also made in remembrance of the deaths of Polish American leaders who fought during the American Revolution. This switch from August to October also helped schools to participate in celebrations, as they previously could not due to summer vacation.

If you’re interested in celebrating this year, there will be Polish Heritage events held throughout Massachusetts. In Boston on Sunday, October 17, there will be an event held from 12-6pm at the Polish American Citizens Club. This is a family-friendly event that includes food, drinks, desserts and music. The club is located at 82 Boston St., Boston, MA.
