December Sunday School Class for Adults and Youth

Dr. Amy Pauw has graciously agreed to offer an in-person Bible study the first three weeks of December from 9:45 - 10:45 a.m. in the back building’s Gathering Room. The study will be based on Dr. Tyler Mayfield’s new book, Father Abraham’s Many Children: The Bible in a World of Religious Difference. Amy and Tyler are colleagues at Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary. Mayfield looks at the familiar Bible stories of Cain and Abel, Ishmael and Isaac, and Esau and Jacob, and shows how to read them in a way that welcomes religious difference and diversity. You do not need to have the book, nor have read it, to participate in this wonderful opportunity for learning and conversation. It is s a perfect topic for youth and adults. If you cannot to come to all classes, come when you can.

An added bonus: Patti and Jack Marcum will have coffee and tea ready at 9:45 a.m. for folks to take to Sunday school or for those who prefer time with other CHPCers for general conversation instead. That group will meet in the church office, also in the back building.

Giving Back for Advent

The Interfaith Coalition for Immigrant Justice is organizing a holiday event to benefit La Casita. They have asked many churches to participate. They are collecting specific food items, specific children's books in Spanish, Walmart gift cards, and more. We have narrowed the list to just a few items that can be brought to church each Sunday of Advent. The fourth Sunday's donation will benefit UCHM.

November 27 - Bring dry beans

December 4 - Bring dry rice

December 11 - Bring canned vegetables

December 18 - Bring cooking oil (to be donated to UCHM)

If you would like the entire list of items, please reach out to Claudia Foulkes or Tricia Lloyd-Sidle.

Guns to Gardens, December 4

The prophet Isaiah offers a vision of a peaceful world in which weapons of destruction are transformed into gardening tools. The Gun Violence Prevention Team of Crescent Hill Presbyterian Church is joining with other faith and community groups in a small step toward bringing Isaiah’s vision to reality by offering a gun safe-surrender event.

The Guns to Gardens event will be on Sunday, December 4, from 2 to 4 p.m., in the parking lot of Douglass Boulevard Christian Church, corner of Bardstown Road and Douglass Blvd., in the Highlands. This is an opportunity for anyone with unwanted guns to dispose of them safely and responsibly, with the assurance that the weapons will not be resold or end up back on the street. The guns will be cut into pieces and later forged into tools, art, or jewelry.

This year’s Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) General Assembly encouraged congregations to sponsor Guns to Gardens events. Churches and other organizations around the country will be offering similar events the weekend of December 3–4 as part of a national Guns to Gardens movement launched by RAWtools and Presbyterian Peace Fellowship. If you have guns you no longer want or need, or if you know someone who does, please bring them and help us “turn swords into plowshares” on December 4!

Christmas Concert

Members of the Crescent Hill Presbyterian Church Music Ministry will present a Christmas Concert on Sunday, December 18, at 2:00 p.m., in the sanctuary. During the concert, Amy Pauw and Doug Yeager will present a flute suite of Christmas carols. Frank Kirk, Jr. and David Paul Gibson will present selections from THE NUTCRACKER and favorite Christmas songs, including WHITE CHRISTMAS, I’LL BE HOME FOR CHRISTMAS, and SLEIGH RIDE played piano four-hand style. The concert is free, open to all, and will be followed by a light reception.

Children’s Sunday School on Zoom

Children of all ages are invited to come Zoom with us from 9:45 to 10:15 a.m. every Sunday. We will gather for music, Bible stories, crafts, and more. Throughout the fall we will hear stories about Moses, Ruth, David, and other ancestors in the faith. Our crazy friend Sid is back too. Join us each week to see how Sid, once again, has fundamentally misunderstood the Bible story.

Never a dull moment in children’s Sunday school! Teachers are Jerry Van Marter, Eva Stimson, Bev Machin, and Luke Van Marter (aka Sid). Please let us know if you would like to join our teaching team. Email Jerry to get on the list to receive weekly Zoom invitations and other announcements.

Volunteer Opportunity

Help is needed to prepare communion on the first Sunday of the month, and for special holidays. It's a simple task that would require you to arrive at church by 10:30 to do preparation, and stay after church about 15 minutes to clean up. Please contact Faith Grady to be added to the volunteer list. You can let her know what Sundays you are available by emailing office@crescenthill.church or calling 502-893-5381.

December Youth Group Activity

Sunday, December 11, 3-6 p.m. Marvel movie watching with a taco bar!! We will have some fun movie and taco time at church in the youth room. If desired, we can also brainstorm ideas of how to fix up the youth room, play some ping pong, or do some arts/crafts while watching. We'll decide collectively which movie to watch.

For any and all questions, call/text Rebecca Barnes or email revrebeccabarnes@gmail.com
