Dear Daniel,

An Unexpected Challenge

We don't usually send back to back newsletters, but this is an unusual circumstance that threatens our clinic building. We're asking you to abide in prayer for us as we work through something very difficult.

Behind our clinic building, there is a canal that drains flood waters from the mountains down to the main highway about a quarter mile from the building. Like most homes and businesses along the road, the clinic is constructed right up to the canal. In an effort to alleviate flooding of the highway, the city of Cap-Haitien decided to widen the canal. With no notice at all, heavy equipment started working at the main road and they are headed up the hill toward the clinic building as this is being written.

This process started yesterday, March 13, 2025. As they go, they are knocking down several feet of the buildings on both sides of the canal. There is no due process, no concept of eminent domain, and no compensation. The photo shows one of the homes by the main highway. By all appearances, we are going to lose part of the back side of clinic building. That wall holds our solar equipment electronics and batteries, and below that is the clinic's laboratory.

Gethro and some of our other friends are at the clinic this morning taking solar panels off the roof and disassembling the related electronics so they can be moved to an as-yet undetermined secure location. Moving the lab is also a priority since it is immediately vulnerable. This is just today's priority. Everything has to be moved out of the clinic because it will be left open to the elements and will be vulnerable to looting.

Obviously, the clinic is now temporarily closed. Consequently, we are putting staff on paid leave until we can repair the building and reopen. We have to be faithful to them in this extraordinary circumstance. We plead for your prayers during this disruption. We ask for those who are hard at work today and the next day or two as they scramble to beat the destruction. We ask for our staff who is shocked by the situation. Then, as we learn the outcome, we ask for prayer that we can rebuild and reopen stronger than ever. Even though we were surprised by this situation, God was not. He remains ever faithful.

By the way, all of our other operations continue unabated, including the developing plans for the kids in Dolval we recently announced.

Thank you for your faithful prayers and support!

Blessings to all,
Dan Merrefield
