Hello All,
One nice thing about an end-of-the-year is it gives us an opportunity to look at a new one with new eyes and new expectations. Kind of like a re-set. Our intention and expectations are for a Happy, Healthy, Prosperous and Fulfilling 2022 for All of you, and for All of your horses. That’s our job after all, and it’s a good one.
Over Here
Last week...

In sunny California this week for an exciting new 2-day Seminar that we’ve been developing. Those of you who’ve watched the Light to the Core (LTC) video will know what a deep effect this light work can have on a horse. Many people also like that it doesn’t involve moving around feet, legs, or heads. It really gets your focus on reading the horse and waiting for its nervous system to let its guard down (sympathetic) so that it can release tension on its own (parasympathetic).
What we’re teaching in this new Light to the Core Seminar is how to apply light and subtle techniques in an organized way, and to observe what the horse is telling you in a way that means something and is relevant to your horse.
Canadian Instructor Lori Hoppe and I have been working on this for some months and this week was the first “test” in the U.S. and we can report that it went extremely well.
|
|
We had 12 students, and Instructor, Lori Hoppe and Assistant, Sandy Vreeberg were great. They must have had excellent training. If you haven’t seen the Light To the Core video then I’d advise taking a look and seeing if the Seminar’s something you might be interested in. Or better yet, ask your horse! (Reminds me of a joke but won’t go there. The proof-readers are watching.) We’ll be putting these new Seminar's on the Calendar soon.
While this newsletter’s being proof-read for grammatical errors and bad jokes we’re having a Considering the Horse - Mind and Body Clinic with Mark Rashid this weekend in Cave Creek, AZ.
Will also be certifying ten (count ‘em, ten) new Masterson Method Certified Practitioners (MMCP's) while in Cave Creek, and we have a Weekend Seminar being taught in Wickenburg, AZ the following month. More on that next month. Am hopping on a plane and following the weather.
Over There
Endurance GB is the governing body for the sport of Endurance and Competitive Riding in the UK. I was just reading through their website to see what I could say about them, and I should just say that what I see is good.
|
|
You can read for yourself, but here are some things that stood out for me.
- Their mission is to promote and enhance the sport of Endurance Riding (Competitive Long Distance) by providing competition, training and development that will appeal to all levels of the rider from beginner to world class.
- They cater for all levels of ability, whether you simply want to compete occasionally or aim for International competition.
- They provide and manage well over 100 events a year riding registered horses and ponies as well as social and pleasure rides to encourage non-members.
- And most importantly, they “endeavour to promote and uphold at all times the highest standards of horse welfare.”
Endurance rider and writer Jennifer Lee recently wrote an article on MM and endurance for Endurance GB Magazine on The Masterson Method®. It’s in print in the UK now if you want to check it, and EGB, out. (link to article, pages 36-39).

It looks like travel restrictions are loosening up (we like to loosen restrictions). We have quite a few courses set up in the UK and EU, as well as a Weekend Seminar in Israel on March 2nd and 3rd taught by Nikki Kagan. I feel that Nikki’s kind of like a pioneer out in the wilderness, tenaciously keeping The Masterson Method going in the far reaches of our world. Thank you, Nikki and keep it up!
|
|
In the UK, Vicky Devlin’s informed me that she’s found a host to sponsor a Weekend Seminar at a yard in her back yard - so to speak - of West Yorkshire. It’s very close to where she lives, so if you’re looking for a place where you can learn to use some Masterson Method techniques on your own horse, with help nearby, check out Vicky and the Weekend Seminar here.
|
|
I haven’t been able to get back to Australia but we’re working on it. We were lucky to be able to have an Instructor trained in New Zealand before all this happened. If you’ve done a Weekend Seminar there and are looking to do an Advanced Course, Instructor Nadine Vollmerg has one coming up at the end of February, and another Weekend Seminar at the end of March. Go Nadine!
That’s about it for the news for now. Gotta’ run to catch a plane and make that new course!
Happy 2022 to all of you!
Enjoy your horses!

Here is more from Anita Chang-Vigo...part three of her Demo-Saga (from Fall 2021)
"My third demo was at a barn with boarders who were mostly Western and English pleasure riders. The owner had invited me to work on horses at her barn after another bodyworker cancelled.
|
|
I introduced The Masterson Method to her and explained the levels of touch and different releases that I look for in a horse as I worked on a few horses at the barn over the span of a couple of weeks.
The barn owner suggested that we do a demo at the barn where more horse owners could come and see for themselves the effect of The Masterson Method Bodywork. I did the demo on a lesson horse, Ranger, who was visually uncomfortable in his stance at the start of the demo.
|
|
As I worked with Ranger and fielded questions from horse owners, Ranger's demeanor shifted and his body showed obvious signs of relaxation. Both Ranger and the participants of the demo walked away with a greater appreciation of The Masterson Method® Bodywork."

Jacqueline Kimmel,
MMCP and Coach
Hatboro, Pennsylvania
Jackie fell in love with horses at a very young age after her first pony ride at her cousin’s birthday party. She later drifted away from the equine world, but returned to horses after college as an equine vet tech and then spent time volunteering at a local therapy barn. While she loved volunteering, she still struggled to find her calling. She wanted to help the therapy horses that gave so much, but wasn’t sure how.
It was after the loss of her Aunt Karen that she realized she was floating along grabbing at straws to make her happy. Her Aunt had encouraged her to live the life of her dreams, to spend her days caring for horses and creating art. And instead, she was working four jobs, doing neither of those things, and utterly unhappy. Her Aunt’s death opened her eyes to the importance of doing what we love now, while we still have time. It was shortly after this life changing realization that she discovered The Masterson Method®. During a visit to her favorite barn, an MMCP was working with a horse and even allowed her to try bladder meridian. Jackie was completely mesmerized and knew in that moment that this was the path she’d been looking for all this time.
Jackie finds joy in the ability to work with the horse in a way that relaxes them while releasing tension. She continues to give back to the equine therapy community that inspired her. She is passionate about her work and excited to share about the benefits of MM with anyone who peeks their head into the stall during a bodywork session. When not at the barn, she spends her time creating art for her small business The Wandering Artist JMK, LLC., and working part time at a vet clinic.

Hilka Querl, MMCP
London, United Kingdom
Hilka has been passionate about horses since the tender age of 10 when her best friend persuaded her to have her first riding lesson. Hilka soon started helping out around the yard in return for lessons and shared her friend’s pony. After time away from horses during her twenties, she joined a work-based riding club in her early thirties and soon started training towards her BHS instructor qualification. She first became interested in improving horses’ well being through massage and bodywork in 2014 and when researching the topic, it happened to be Jim’s book ‘Beyond Horse Massage’ that she came across, read and then tried out the techniques on her share horse.
In 2016, Hilka certified as an Equine Sports Massage therapist with Equissage Europe and worked as an ESMT for three years. Then, in 2019, when looking for a CPD course, she signed up for a Masterson Method® seminar. Seeing the method in action, seeing the positive results and how much the horses enjoy it, she decided to switch modalities and certified as a Masterson Method® Practitioner in May 2021. Hilka is passionate about helping horses and helping their owners build a better partnership with their horse. She also works as a freelance BHS Stage 3 coach and holds the Stage 4 Care & Management certificate.
Hilka is registered with the IAAT in the UK. She is based in North London and also covers the home counties.

Denise Kaltner, MMCP
Karlsruhe, Baden-Baden, Germany
Ever since I can remember, horses have been an important part of my life. Even before I was born, the love of horses already ran through my blood via my parents, owning my first pony before I could walk. From what I can remember. I played with that pony more often than I played with other kids.
Having grown up alongside race horses and taking care of them via our family business, I became accustomed to seeing horse injuries and I was always interested in learning about techniques that helped their recovery. It was approximately 25 years ago that I watched my first session of a horse osteopath. I was immediately fascinated by the positive reaction the horse showed and the increased well-being and performance the session delivered. From pretty much then on, horse therapy and bodywork never left my mind and I had always had a goal of one day turning that passion into a horse osteopath / chiropractic career.
After completing an initial basic horse osteopath training course, I moved my studies into animal acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine. Here I found more tools to further my skillset, however I still didn´t feel as though I had garnered the specialized knowledge and skill base to provide the dedicated service I was after.
It was at this stage that I came across a book by Jim Masterson and his self-prescribed method to treating horses, and I was immediately drawn in to his wholistic approach to the wellbeing of a horse, a method that highlighted the need, not to work 'on' the horse, but to work 'with' them.

Interested in taking a course? Here are a few testimonials that might convince you!
Being an advocate for the horse is not simply about good health, good diet, and good shelter. The Masterson Method takes into account the mental health of a horse as well. Man has changed so many dynamics in the experience of the horse over the years and this method gives them a moment of grace that allows them to escape so much of the noise we put into their lives. (Advanced 5-day)
That this course will not only change your life and your horse’s life, but can you imagine if we could spread the word and work to every single horse in the world?
(Weekend Seminar)
You will never believe this stuff until you see it, and you’ll never believe you could actually do it until you try it! (Weekend Seminar)
