Boosting Resolution: Electric Fields in Protein Crystallography

Boosting Resolution: Electric Fields in Protein Crystallography

In a paper in the European Biophysics Journal, Khakurel et al. (2025) explore a novel approach to enhance resolution in X-ray protein crystallography. Their method involves applying a high-voltage electric field to protein crystals after crystallization. The study demonstrates that this application of an electric field can improve crystal diffraction quality and thus enhance resolution. The authors also show that the protein structure remains largely unperturbed up to a certain electric field threshold. This "on-the-fly" resolution enhancement offers a promising avenue for improving the analysis of protein crystals.
