NOTES
DAY OF THE DEAD (DIA DE LOS MUERTOS)
K-8 students will be learning about the Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) in their Spanish classes this week. The Day of the Dead is a holiday traditionally celebrated in Mexico and other Spanish speaking countries on November 1st and 2nd. As part of this celebration, families build ofrendas (offerings) to honor their deceased loved ones and visit their graves.

In order for students to further their knowledge and understanding of the Day of the Dead and experience part of this cultural celebration, we will be creating and decorating an ofrenda at Riverside. Students and staff who would like to participate are invited to bring in a photo of a family member, friend, or pet that has passed away. These people/pets will then be recognized and celebrated on our ofrenda.

Please send in any photos by Tuesday, October 31st. Photos may either be brought in and given to Karin or emailed to her. In order to ensure that your photo is returned to you, please write your family's name on the back of it. Thank you in advance for helping support this opportunity for students to develop their intercultural skills!
VOLKSFEST
We hope you received your invitation to the Board of Trustees' annual party, Volksfest. This is an adult event, . Please RSVP if you haven't already. We're looking forward to a fun evening of food, drink, and festivities.
FALL FOOD DRIVE
Middle school students, Celia Faherty, Lucy Moriarty, Cora Adams, and Liam Albritton are organizing a food drive to help feed our greater community. All items collected will be donated to The Lyndon Area Food Shelf for Thanksgiving boxes. The Lyndon Area Food Shelf serves Lyndon, Lyndon Center, Lyndonville, Burke Hollow, East & West Burke, Kirby, Newark, Sutton, Sheffield, and Wheelock. They are seeing more need now than ever before and having a hard time keeping their shelves stocked. We need your help with donations of non-perishable items. You will find collection boxes on the porch of the house and barn at Riverside today and until the morning of Friday, November 17th. Thank you so much for your help.
FAMILY-STAFF-ALUMNI SOCCER GAME
We invite all friends of Riverside to join us on the field this Thursday, October 26 at 4:00 to play together. It will be a great way to end the season and express our gratitude to the parent volunteers and staff who supported our teams this year.
3-5th GRADE SWIMMING
3-5th grade will be swimming for the last time this Friday, October 27. Please remember to pick up on those dates at the college at 3:15.
PK-5 CONFERENCES
PK-5th graders will have half day on Wednesday, November 1 with an early dismissal at 12:30, and only K-5th will have a half day on Thursday, November 2. Conferences will happen during 30 minute appointments in the classroom. Please sign up for appointments with classroom teachers.

The K-5th Extended Day Program will run that day from 12:30 until 5:00, and the PreK After School from 12:30-4:15. Please email Sean or email McKenna directly if your elementary school child will be joining at 12:30 so that they can plan the long afternoon accordingly.
PARENT FUNDRAISING
Thank you graphic designer and parent Kate Renner (2nd grader Hannah and 6th grader Raya) for creating this awesome graph to celebrate the fact that the parent community is already more than half way to its fundraising goal for the year! Kate will be sending an update each month for us to share with you here.

Remember: we do not expect all families to participate in all the catalogue/sales fundrasiers (we do hope for high participation in events, which are such fun to do together), do think about friends, family, and neighbors who might like the product, or gifts you might plan to give this winter, and take advantage of the opportunity to support Riverside by making purchases.
ONGOING CATALOGUE SALES
We do not expect all families to participate in these kinds of fundraisers, but we invite you to consider it if the products appeal to you, or if you know someone who would like the link and the chance to support Riverside.

Mabel's Labels - last day to order is this Friday, October 27.

Rada Cutlery - Parent Annie Patoine (3rd grader Paul, 6th grader Lily) has organized a catalogue sale with Rada knives, kitchen tools, and quick mixes. 40% percent of each sale will be donated back to Riverside. Items from this catalogue make great upgrades to your own kitchen inventory or wonderful gifts for others during the holiday season.
  • Catalogue (going home with students today) sales are open until November 10th, when forms should be returned to Krystal. If you place an order through the catalog, then the order will be shipped directly to the school.
  • Online orders are open until November 17th. Share the link with friends and family, and products can be shipped directly. If you have any questions, you can email Annie Patoine.
6-8 BIOGRAPHY FAIR
Middle school students have been researching impactful people from ancient history (6th grade), America (7th grade), or around the world (8th grade). They are beginning to outline and draft research papers now, as well as plan oral presentations and visual displays.

We encourage parents, grandparents, and friends to join us on Bio Fair day (Friday, November 3) to celebrate their hard work as part of their audience. At 9:00 am 6th graders will present in the pavilion (dress warmly!) and 8th graders will present in the yurt. At 10:30 7th graders will present in the barn.
SKATING AND GYMNASTICS
Starting next week, we will take K-8th graders to the Fenton Chester Arena and to Kingdom Gymnastics in different mixed age groups. This is because our whole school doesn't fit on the ice arena. If you haven't completed this release form form for gymnastics yet, Nelia will be emailing a reminder.

Pick up at each location is at 3:15 on these dates, *with the exception of the half day on November 17.*
  • Nov. 3: Aqua, Terra, Caelum at skating, Ignis at gymnastics
  • Nov. 10: Ignis, Caelum, Terra at skating, Aqua at gymnastics
  • Nov. 17 *at 1:30*: all K-5th graders skating, 6-8th graders on campus

STUDENT COUNCIL
The Student Council is planning a Halloween Extravaganza with a circus theme for this Friday, October 27. Council members are working in two committees to organize the event, with chairpersons for each. There will be a party and haunted house (with options for less scary and more scary tours) for all PK-8th graders from 5:15-6:45, with some candy as game prizes, and a dance for 6-8th graders from 7:00-9:00, with both healthy and salty snacks.

We hope Student Council members can stay after school to help set up the event. They should bring an after school snack, and anything they might want to eat alongside the pizza we order for them around 4:45 for dinner.
8th GRADE CHOICES
Our 8th graders are so fortunate to have the opportunity to make a choice about their high school experience, and we aim to help support their thoughtful decision making process. Ultimately, tracking all the steps for enrollment is a parent responsibility, and we will share information as best we can.

Admissions officers from various schools will visit Advisory classes on Monday mornings with Caroline.
  • St.Johnsbury Academy: today
  • Lyndon Institute: Nov. 6
  • East Burke School: TBA

The following Open House events have been scheduled, we encourage families to attend:
ARTS NIGHT
PreK-8th grade students have been working hard in music class, band, chorus, and the drama elective to learn new skills and preparing for Riverside's Performing Arts Night on November 15th at 5:30 pm at the Lyndon Institute Auditorium. All students will be participating in this performance and we hope families will make it a priority to attend and to celebrate their hard work. If your child will not be able to attend, please email Marie ASAP so she can plan for this absence.

Mark your calendar: that afternoon of November 15, K-8th grade students will be rehearsing at LI and pick up will be there at the auditorium door at 3:00 (for K-5th)/3:30 (for 6-8th). While Preschool students will be part of the performance, they will not be part of this off-campus rehearsal.
