House Ag Committee delays vote on $94B in new ag spending
The House Agriculture Committee marked up Friday into the evening its portion of new ag funding under the agriculture committee’s jurisdiction of what would be included in the $3.5 trillion reconciliation package that Congress hopes to pass in the upcoming weeks. Members from both sides of the aisle expressed concerns on the process, including lack of details of the estimated $94 billion in new spending, including an $89.1 billion increase in deficit spending. The final vote is scheduled now for Monday morning at 8 a.m.

White House takes aim at higher meat prices
About half of the overall increase in grocery prices can be attributed to a significant increase from meat prices—specifically, beef, pork, and poultry, according to a new report from the White House’s National Economic Council. While factors such as increased consumer demand have played a role, the price increases are also driven by a lack of competition at a key bottleneck point in the meat processing supply chain, claims the White House.

Atypical BSE cases detected in Brazil
Over the weekend, the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Food Supply confirmed that two atypical cases of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE)had been discovered at two separate meat plants.
On Monday, the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) maintained Brazil's status as a country with a "negligible risk " for BSE. However, beef exports to China had been temporarily suspended as part of an agreement between the two countries.

Dr. George E. Seidel, Jr.
ADSA is saddened to share the news of the passing of Dr. George E. Seidel, Jr. on September 4, 2021. He is survived by his wife of 50+ years Sarah, their son Andrew, daughter-in-law Yuan and grandson Gregory.
George grew up on a dairy farm in Womelsdorf, Pennsylvania. He was the oldest of four children and attended a one-room school. He earned a BS at Penn State University in dairy science in 1965 and an MS and PhD from Cornell University in 1968 and 1970, respectively, focusing on reproductive physiology in cattle. Following his PhD, he completed a post-doc at Harvard Medical School, where he studied electron microscopy of rabbit oocytes. In 1971, George took a faculty position at Colorado State University, where he rose through the ranks from assistant professor to university distinguished professor in 1993. During this time, he took sabbaticals at Yale University and the Whitehead Institute at MIT. Even though he transitioned to emeritus status at Colorado State University in 2011, George continued to collaborate on research projects, write papers, give lectures, and attend meetings until the time of his death.
Throughout his career, George received many awards and accolades. In 1992, he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences, where he served in the animal, nutritional, and microbial sciences section. George also received the ADSA Zoetis Physiology Award as well as the Distinguished Service Award (2001) and the Pioneer Award (2008) from the International Embryo Transfer Society, a society that he helped establish nearly 50 years ago. In 2014, he was elected to the National Academy of Inventors. His list of publications is long and still growing. He graduated 18 PhD students, 38 MS students, mentored more than 30 postdocs, and influenced many more.
In an interview conducted at the end of 2020, when asked to look back at his career, George said, “For the most part, I just consider myself lucky—having been at the right place in the right time. I have had good colleagues, students, and mentors. I cannot minimize my wife’s input as well. I think, for the most part, I get more credit than I deserve—sometimes less than I should, sometimes more—so it evens out.” George was a humble, kind, and genuine man. I think we can all agree that those who had the privilege of knowing and working with him were the lucky ones. (MORE)
