A Message from the Bishop for Lent

Bishop Phyllis Spiegel launches a racial healing emphasis for a diocesan-wide Racial Healing program for Lent. A special Kaleidoscope training program took place on Saturday February 25th and offered the opportunity to learn about Racial Healing.

2023 Diocesan Convention

The Rt. Rev. Phyllis Spiegel has announced the Diocesan Convention for 2023 will be held April 21 & 22, 2023. It will be held at Ascension St. Matthew's in Price, Utah.

The Bishop and the Convention Planning Committee have modified this year’s Diocesan Convention to be two days long instead of the previously announced three days in duration.

Convention costs have increased dramatically in the last four years while congregations and the Diocese have just begun to recover from the “Zoom era.” Additionally, the desire to once again meet outside of the metro area to celebrate the congregational and geographic diversity of the diocese has an added budgetary costs that the Bishop and Diocese are taking into consideration.

Thus, a two-day convention, as now modified, has become a desirable, workable, and blessed compromise to preserve our need to gather in community without adding further monetary strain as we return to in-person conventions.

All Things Convention:

Pre-convention: March 25th at 10:00 a.m. via Zoom, link here. The regional meetings will take place prior to pre-convention using the same Zoom link at 9:00 a.m. where elections will be held.

Hotels: Attendees are responsible for making their own hotel reservations. Two hotels have been secured for the Convention. Please note, that the cut-off date for rooms is April 6, 2023. Hotel information link here.

Funeral for The Rev. Cn. William Ivan Cendese

The funeral will held at the Cathedral Church of St. Mark, 231 East 100 South, Salt Lake City, Utah 84111, on Friday March 17th at 11:00 a.m.

From: The Rt. Rev. Phyllis Spiegel to the Diocese of Utah

Please join me in prayer for the family of The Rev. Cn. Ivan Cendese, PhD, who died January 7, 2023. We also pray in thanksgiving for his faithful, longtime, and joyous service to the Diocese always done with compassion, kindness, and a good dose of humor when it was needed.

William Ivan Cendese was born in 1936 in Niagara Falls, Canada. He served as a Roman Catholic priest and as a gifted teacher throughout the 1970s and 1980s prior to his years at the Episcopal Diocese. He loved education and earned a BA, two Master’s Degrees and his PhD from the University of Utah in 1980. He served Salt Lake students at Judge Memorial and Highland High. He then co-founded Valley High for teens who had difficulty in other Salt Lake area schools. Hundreds and hundreds of former students credit him with giving them a chance when others didn’t offer hope.

Bishop George Bates received him into the Episcopal Church and the Diocese of Utah in 1989. He graced the Diocese in a dozen callings including seven years as the diocesan Canon to the Ordinary from 1995 until 2003. He assisted at St. Peter’s in Clearfield, served as Priest in Charge at St. Francis in Moab, and further assisted as a Cathedral Canon at St. Mark’s in Salt Lake City.

The Rev. Dave Sakrison, Vicar of Moab’s St. Francis Church was mentored by Canon Cendese. He experienced Canon Cendese’s love of congregational work and his passion for the desert when Fr. Cendese answered the call to serve four years at St. Francis starting in 2007. “It was a natural fit for him. He bought a house and settled in. He fit right in with the Moab community and the folks at St Francis. He loved to bike, hike and eat good food and have a good time. He literally fell in love with Moab, the people and the desert. His personality fit, and he was engaged with the community not only St Francis but Moab in general. He was a great mentor and teacher - kind to a fault and above all a great friend.” Canon Cendese would later live in Page, Arizona and in St. George.

The Rev. Libby Hunter served with him in church and outreach efforts. She marked his death with a fond remembrance for his “gentle, pastoral approach to relationships” Another longtime colleague, The Rev. Susan Toone, recalls “how kind and patient he was.” The Rev. Dave Sakrison summed up Canon Cendese’s personality that graced the lives of all of us who knew him, “It was hard to keep up with Ivan, a bundle of energy and idea. In conversation you could hardly get a word in edge-wise, he attributed that trait to his Italian heritage. Ivan was funny with a keen since of humor, and he pretty much always had a smile on his face.”

Yours in the Spirit,

+Bp. Phyllis

Opening Our Hearts Annual Meeting of Episcopal Church Women

This year’s Annual Meeting Retreat will take place in Salt Lake City, Utah at the Episcopal Church Center on June 23rd. The theme of the meeting is "Opening Our Hearts". We hope every Diocese in Province VIII will send at least one representative to learn from one another and network, elect officers for the 2024-2027 triennium, meet new friends and rekindle old relationships.

While still in the planning stages, our retreat will include an extended workshop from the Leading with Heart leadership program currently being developed by Province VIII women in collaboration with women from across the country.

We’ll also take some time for reflection using the outdoor labyrinth at the Church Center, and enjoy a hands-on workshop making Anglican Rosaries with a local Episcopal Church Woman.

More details will be announced very soon. See here for information.
