| | State Budget Makes Cuts to Kings Funding | |
The Kings Board of Education and Administration strives to be transparent and provide relevant financial information to the community. We were recently made aware that Ohio Governor Mike DeWine's initial state budget cuts Kings’ funding by approximately $2,000,000 in school years 2025-2027. See the graph below that illustrates the drop in state funding.
We are collaborating with state and county advocacy groups, as well as community members to push for adjustments to the budget proposal which will provide essential resources for our growing diverse student population and support property tax relief for elderly and disabled residents, If you would like to help advocate to protect Kings’ funding, you can take action by contacting our state legislators. Simply use this form letter and send it to these legislators and their aides.
Please contact Treasurer, Mike Morrow, at mmorrow@kingslocal.net with any questions regarding the state budget or Kings finances.
| | KHS Students Participate in Rotary Speech Contest | |
Two Kings High School students participated in the Mason-Deerfield Rotary’s Four-Way Test Speech Contest this week. Congratulations to Junior Taylor Kleis and Senior, Eva Moore who took first and second place, respectively.
The Four-Way Test Speech Contest, sponsored by Rotary International, is held annually for interested high school students at local and district levels. Two students from both KHS and Mason High School compete each year.
The speech is presented from memory without the aid of a podium, notes, displays, or props, and lasts between four and six minutes. Contestants apply the Four-Way Test which asks the following four things: Is it the TRUTH? Is it Fair to all concerned, Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS, and Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
Taylor spoke about her father, the late Kings teacher, Kevin Kleis, who passed away from cancer last July after a two-and-a-half-year battle with cancer. She said she learned from him that living your best life and leading others with kindness, respect, and love is so important. Rotary President, Jean Raga said, "She truly carries her father in her heart, you could just feel it from her speech."
As the winner, Taylor will now compete at the District level on Sunday, March 30 at Wright State University. We are proud of you Taylor and Eva!
Rotary International is a worldwide organization dedicated to serving others. Great emphasis is placed on using one’s vocation to serve others and establish honesty and integrity as marks of one’s profession and involvement in the world of work. The Four-Way Test has a long tradition or use worldwide and is a part of Rotary’s motto: Service Above Self.
As the winner, Taylor will now compete at the District level on Sunday, March 30 at Wright State University. Good luck, Taylor!
Taylor and Eva's speech teacher is Mr. Pete Moore.

| | Teen World Mental Wellness Day | |
At Kings High School, the spirit of compassion and support for mental wellness rang through the halls as students recently came together on Monday, March 3 to celebrate World Teen Mental Wellness Day.
Spearheaded by the school's dedicated Sources of Strength Peer Leaders, this initiative was a testament to the power of student-led advocacy for mental health. Sources of Strength students were once again awarded a grant to help fund the day's activities courtesy of the Joe Burrow Foundation, Hopeful Empowered Youth, Interact for Health, and bi3.
With enthusiasm and determination, these young leaders organized a series of events and activities aimed at promoting mental wellness within the school community, such as a duck scavenger hunt, prize wheel, poster contest, and more. The day was filled with opportunities for students to engage in meaningful conversations about mental health and learn valuable coping skills
Kings High School is a Sources of Strength (SoS) school. The mission of Sources is to spread hope, help, and strength to our community by helping students and staff turn to their strengths and supports during tough times.
| | KHS German Students Teach KME 3rd Grade | |
It's always great when we see our older Knights working with our youngest Knights.
We caught Kings High School German 4 students visiting Kings Mills Elementary this week. The high schoolers taught the 3rd graders some basic German. They planned their lessons and created materials and activities for the elementary students.
KHS German teacher, Frau Christine Koenig, said, "The little kids (and I, too) fell in love with them and can’t wait for the fun classes they’ll teach in the coming weeks."
This is yet another example of our Kings Power5 Skills in action!
| | KHS Teacher Recognized for Work in Volunteerism | |
Congratulations to Kings High School Math teacher, Lynn Brant who has been named a 2025 Civic Learning Week All-Star by Innerview.
Innerview said, "One of the many areas we have seen impact and commitment is her tireless effort to support and lead the KHS Community Service Program at Kings High School. Inspiring students to get involved in community service delivers immediate community needs but also helps students demonstrate character, connectedness, and develops critical skills all through hands-on civic learning experiences."
Under Mrs. Brant's supervision, KHS students have invested 7,228 impact hours of talent and time in community service this school year. "Volunteerism is a learned behavior and you have been a fabulous role model," they said.
| | KHS Seniors & Counseling Office Have Been Busy | |
These last few months have been a busy time for our Kings High School seniors and the KHS Counseling Office which has been helping them during the college application process.
The KHS Counseling Office recently provided our students with standardized test experience by hosting the ACT® and Pre-ACT® tests. The Pre-ACT® is a diagnostic practice test for sophomores that gives them experience of taking the ACT® before they take the actual test. Three hundred forty-five students took the test through the LEAP Program, a local test prep company that will score and email test results to students and parents.
We had 400 juniors take the ACT® test which was an opportunity for students to take the test for free and receive a legitimate score for college applications. The typical cost to take the ACT® is $60. As part of a state mandate, state law requires districts and community schools to administer the ACT® to all 11th-grade students in the spring of each year. ACT® scores can be used for college admission purposes and/or seals needed for high school graduation.
Additionally, KHS School Counselor, Erika Volker reports that approximately 69% of KHS seniors have applied to at least one college, and 71% of seniors have applied to an average of four colleges for the next school year.
The KHS Counseling Office has sent out 2,758 documents including transcripts and counselor recommendations and our teachers have sent 1,146 recommendation letters.
Good luck to all of our seniors in their college and job searches!

In an effort to be "green," the District does not send paper flyers home. We use a platform called Peachjar that houses flyers of community programs and resources.
Parents receive approved flyers via email, and they are posted on our digital flyerboard for easy retrieval. Any organization can distribute information to our community by creating an account!

| | Kings Athletics Knight to Remember | |
The Kings Athletic Booster Club hosted its annual Knight to Remember fundraiser last weekend. Their western-themed event hosted nearly 300 attendees at the Manor House in Mason.
The biggest fundraiser of the year for the Athletic Department brought in over $50,000 that will support our student-athletes. Kings is one of very few school districts in the area that doesn't require athletes to pay to participate. It is because of the money raised at this event that helps defray the costs.
See below for a list of all of the sponsors who helped make the night a success.
