Rose Elementary School honored with PBIS Implementation Gold Award
|
Rose Elementary School earned the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) Gold Implementation Award. Principal Nanci Pass, Assistant Principal Ryan Startz and PBIS Lead Wendy Lundeen were in attendance at the Oct. 25 board meeting to introduce the video report on Rose's latest accomplishment.
"The Gold recognizes that we have solidly put in our Tier I interventions and plans for our social-emotional and behavioral expectations and our Tier II responses to students who are struggling," explained Principal Pass.
The next regularly scheduled Board of Education meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 15 at Randall Elementary World Languages School.

Eunice Lee, a seventh grader at Thomas Russell Middle School, was honored by the MUSD Board of Education and District leadership for being an amazing student-athlete and a U.S. National Jump Rope Champion.

Representatives of the Viet Museum were honored by the MUSD Board of Education and District Leadership for helping to celebrate Vietnamese Americans through the Viet Museum and events such as Thank You America Day. Viet Museum Director Hong Cao and Sam Ho accepted the Certificate of Recognition.

Milpitas Community Educational Endowment issues $5,000 in grants to two MUSD educators

Weller Elementary School teacher Julie Frost was awarded a $4,500 grant to create a Makerspace, while Calaveras Hills High School teacher Kimi Schmidt received a $500 grant for a Quilting Elective from the Milpitas Community Educational Endowment.
MCEE Board President Amin Fazal, along with MCEE founder Robert Jung, announced this year's grant winners at the October 25 meeting. A dozen MUSD educators applied for the annual grant.
"We felt (the high number of participants) gave us a different picture on how much teachers are doing and how they followed the Strategic Goals. Every project they presented talked about how to improve student education," said Fazal, who shared that there will be $10,000 in grants available in 2024.

MUSD Board of Education unanimously supports teachers, approves pay increase
|

"I'd like to echo the sentiments of the Superintendent and Board President in terms of the work that our teachers do for our children everyday," said Board Vice President Chris Norwood. "We're grateful for having such an outstanding and growing team."
Student Board Rep Mira Bhakta, of Milpitas Middle College High School, added: "We really appreciate the teachers here, and I don't think that I would be sitting here without Ms. [Diana] Orlando's help for teaching me in first and second grade."
In two separate votes Tuesday night, the Board unanimously certified the Disclosure of Milpitas Teachers Association (MTA) Collective Bargaining Agreement and approved the Tentative Agreement and Memorandum of Understanding between MUSD and MTA.

Norma Morales promoted to new role as School Linked Services Supervisor
|
|
Superintendent Cheryl Jordan announced the promotion of Community Liaison Norma Morales to School Linked Services (SLS) Supervisor for Well-Being and Immigrant Support. In this new role, Morales will work in conjunction with the SLS Coordinator, as well as local community organizations, county and city services, to assure students, particularly immigrants and refugees, have access to resources for their wellbeing and academic success.
"I'm very excited about taking on this new role within our district," Morales said. "I am looking forward to fostering and strengthening our community partnerships with our various Milpitas community services as well as working together to implement and evaluate family engagement events and projects for our MUSD students."

MUSD students, staff celebrate Unity Day 2022

MUSD celebrated Unity Day2022 on October 19, with staff, students and families from throughout the district wearing orange to unite for kindness, courage, and inclusion, to prevent students from being bullied. Learning & Development Executive Director Mary Jude Doerpinghaus, who champions this special annual event each year, shared photos in her presentation at the Oct. 25 meeting.

Board approves revisions to Policy 6158: MUSD EducatEveryWhere/Independent Study

|
Learning and Development Executive Director Priti Johari and Director Maurissa Koide introduced proposed revisions to Board Policy 6158, with updates to reflect the legislative language changes in AB 181. The Board approved the revisions by a 4-0 vote with one abstain.
The new legislative language includes changes to when districts must employ tiered reengagement strategies, allows students with exceptional needs to participate in Independent Study if their IEP team makes the decision that they can receive FAPE in that setting, and how an LEA may claim apportionment credit for Independent Study.
