LETTERS FROM

THE PAST

by Jo Strausz Rosen

We are so worried about our families and friends and all who are suffering during these very dark days. As we pray for the State of Israel, and all the innocent people caught in the terror, I think of my maternal grandmother, Bubba Sheindel - Sarah Ainbinder Singerman - whom I used to visit in Peabody, Massachusetts until her death in 1977. Bubba Sheindel, an observant Jew, sat with her prayer book throughout the day when she wasn’t cooking or cleaning or shopping or tending to her grandchildren. She and Zaida raised their six children adhering to the laws of Abraham. She was strong-minded but kind. Several of her grandchildren married out of our faith and although she wasn’t happy about it, she learned to love and accept what she couldn’t change. Imagine that.

CAFE EUROPA

Holocaust survivors, residents of Meer and students from Hillel Day School came together at Meer Apartments to talk with one another and to listen to violinist Henrik Karapetyan at the October Café Europa. It was moving to hear the Hillel students sing and dance with the audience. Karapetyan, who plays violin for the Detroit Opera House, performed beautiful classical and Klezmer music as part of Café Europa, a monthly socialization program sponsored by the Program for Holocaust Survivors and Families of Jewish Senior Life.

LET THE GAME NIGHTS BEGIN

Lisa Farabi, a friend of Tracey Proghovnick, created a wonderful event with the help of Estie Tolwin of Aish. Lisa's father, Mike Cozzetto, recently passed away. His widow, Helen, said Mike loved playing games. She shared this with Estie Tolwin from Aish and together they decided to host game night at Meer, in memory of Mike. It was a great success. More than 40 residents came to play games at Meer after dinner on Tuesday, October 17. Fifteen volunteers from Aish, along with friends and family of the Cozzettos and Farabi's, participated.

Marcia Mittelman, Meer Administrator, brought in all the games and everyone from volunteers to staff to residents had a blast. Volunteers sat with residents at each table and played all sorts of games like rummikuub and canasta (one of the volunteers is a canasta instructor). Some groups played maj and they stayed late, even after the program was over. JSL offered fresh fruit to all the attendees. Swag prizes from JSL were given and the attendees of the night were filled with laughter and hope. Everyone received a flashlight pen - to light up the darkness in our world.

Lisa's family wants to do this quarterly at JSL and we look forward to sharing these fun activities in our other West Bloomfield locations.

Do You Have Family in Israel?

"Do you have family in Israel?” is an oft-repeated question during these trying times.

Don't we all have family in Israel? Are we not family wherever we may reside?

Our sages state: One who walks along the road and suddenly hears wailing, and then cries out to G-d, "Please, I beg you, may these cries not be coming from my household," is a prayer in vain. His prayer will be of no benefit. It is too late to change the fact.

On a deeper level I wish to suggest: By requesting, "May it not be my family members," one is clearly ascribing more importance and concern toward one’s own family than anyone else’s. A prayer of this nature does not evoke equal love and concern for all people. In fact, it reflects one's inner weakness.

It is time for us to realize that we all have family in Israel. We are all sisters and brothers, children of G-d.

Aaron, the brother of Moses, possessed a unique approach to life and love. "He loved peace and pursued peace. He loved “creatures” and led them close to Torah." Why use the term “creatures” in place of people?

The answer is clear. Regardless of color, faith and denomination he loved all people for the mere fact that they were beings created by G-d.

If G-d found it meaningful to create someone, we need to find it important enough to love, care and show concern for that person.

Next time you are asked, “Do you have family in Israel?” consider responding, “I have millions of brothers and sisters in Israel and around the world.” Let us stand united as one family!

More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
