Luke 19: 1-10
Who is Zacchaeus?
Seen with human eyes…

He is a chief tax collector in Jericho, and defiled by the Jewish community.

He is a rich man, extremely wealthy, who has amassed personal wealth by demanding tax payments in excess of what Rome levied, and keeping the difference.

He is a man short in stature, stunted in spiritual maturity.
He is a sinner. He does not live according to the laws of God.

He is separated from God by sin.
He is a traitor, collaborating with the enemy, working for the Roman Empire against the Jews.

Seen with Jesus' eyes…

He is a man who actively seeks Jesus and is willing to go out on a limb just to catch a glimpse of him.

He is a man who immediately offers hospitality to Jesus. Scripture tells us he was "happy to welcome Jesus."

He is a man who gives generously to the poor
"Look, half of my possessions, Lord, I will give to the poor."

He is a man who takes responsibility for his wrongdoings and makes restitution. "If I have defrauded anyone of anything,
I will pay back four times as much."

He is a man who is no longer lost. Jesus has come "to seek out and to save the lost."

And, Zacchaeus is a son of Abraham, a descendant who shares in Abraham's covenant. A man who has the character of Abraham and, therefore, is a man of faith and commitment to God. Just as Abraham, Zacchaeus belongs to God.

Today, as we look at each other, let us see with the eyes of Christ.

AMEN

Mother Rosean's first Mass - view the readings, gospel and the homily by Mother Rosean.

Here is the Sunday Worship Aid for you to print or view.
Today we have the joy of celebrating with Mother Rosean as she presides at her first Mass as an ECC priest after her years of service to the Mary of Magdala community on the Leadership Council, the Liturgy, Education and other committees, as a delegate to the Rocky Mountain Regional Council and to the ECC Synod, and as an ordained deacon.  For this Black Lives Matter reflection, I thought it appropriate to honor a woman who recently broke barriers in her appointment as a state Supreme Court justice.

Some current context. In 22 states, no state Supreme Court justices publicly identify as a person of color, including in 11 states where non-whites make up at least 20% of the population. There are no Black justices in 28 states and no Latino justices in 40 states. Since early 2020, 41 new state Supreme Court justices have been appointed or elected, 30 of them white. Only 7 seats were filled by women of color of which 4 are Black, 1 Asian, and 2 Latina.
Most of us are aware that Sonia Sotomayor is the first Hispanic and first
Latina member of the US Supreme Court. However, today we recognize .someone less well-known: Fabiana Pierre-Louis who was sworn in as a justice on the New Jersey Supreme Court in 2020, becoming the first Black woman to sit on its bench after 233 years of the court’s existence. Appointed at the age of 39, she is also the youngest Associate Justice of that court.

Pierre-Louis was born of Haitian American immigrants in 1980 in New York City and spoke Creole before learning English. She graduated from Union Catholic Regional High School and earned Bachelor's and Juris Doctor degrees from Rutgers. She served as a law clerk for John E. Wallace Jr, a Black NJ Supreme Court justice. She also worked for almost ten years as an Assistant US Attorney, and served as the attorney-in-charge of the US Attorney’s Trenton and Camden branches. In June 2020, New Jersey Governor, Phil Murphy, nominated Pierre-Louis to the New Jersey Supreme Court in replacement of white Justice, Walter Timpone, who was approaching the state's mandatory retirement age. In August, the NJ Senate voted 39–0 to confirm her to the Court.
T
oday, as we celebrate Mother Rosean’s first Mass as priest, let us also pause to lift up and pray for women of color breaking through “glass ceilings” around the country.
