Phone Scams: Hang up!
According to Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam, phone scams are on the rise with scammers impersonating authorities.

The scam involves impersonators making phone calls to individuals, claiming to be from the Washoe County Sheriff's Office. The scammers then demand unsuspecting individuals to pay their "unpaid tickets." Sheriff Balaam reminds the public that the Sheriff's Office will never call people for unpaid tickets, just as they would not call for an outstanding warrant.

An individual who received a suspicious call shares, "I got a call claiming they are from the Sheriff's Office. They said I could not get off the phone with them. They told me I have a warrant out for my arrest but I didn't have any warrants at all."

If you receive a phone call from someone claiming to be from the Sheriff's Office and demanding you to make a payment, hang up right away and report it to the Sheriff's Office at 775-328-3001. You can also visit their website by visiting Washoesheriff.com.
Remember to always be discerning when picking up and talking to another individual on the phone. Anybody can easily deceive a victim and claim to be someone they are not over the phone. If you think you might be talking to a scammer, hang up immediately.
