Community - what does this mean? You’re reading this newsletter so you have identified yourself as someone whose life has been touched by issues of disability, either directly or indirectly.
Have you ever wondered how the name Community Living Essex County (CLEC) was chosen? Did local decision makers pick a name that people would easily identify with Canada-wide? Did they understand that community consisted of everyone, no matter their ability, race, religion or beliefs? The answer to all of these questions is very likely YES!
The month of December, with multiple special events, will likely give you and your family opportunities to interact with members of Windsor-Essex County communities. You may also be interacting with friends and family. Why not take all of these opportunities to educate others about your daily family realities living with individuals who have intellectual disabilities? In order to help people understand and accept everyone, we need to share our knowledge. This is not cause to present things in a negative light. It is a chance to highlight uniqueness. We are all very different BUT our identity as human beings first makes each one of us alike.
Diverse communities can only be celebrated with our ability to open hearts, minds, eyes, and eventually doors that welcome all to this wonderful place called community!
What are you doing to make diversity something worth celebrating?
Some ideas regarding places diversity can be found are included in the links below.
Wishing you and your family a December filled with positive experiences!
Marilyn, Ensemble Family Consultant and the Advisory Committee
