Governor Proposes Legislation
to Address Washington's
Housing Crisis
Washington State Governor Jay Inslee, this week, introduced proposed “missing middle housing” legislation that would legalize and incentivize duplexes, triplexes, quads, and lot splits, on all residential lots located within half a mile of a major transit stop in Washington’s larger cities (including Spokane).

Washington REALTORS® was invited to speak during the Press Conference to give background and declare support for the proposed legislation.

SAR Honors Steve Hagen
SAR Member Steve Hagen was honored, this week, with the Association's Lifetime Achievement Award for a long and distinguished career in real estate.

2021 SAR President Eric Johnson announced the award at the last Membership Meeting of the year, and also shared that Hagen was recently diagnosed with terminal cancer.

While Steve did not feel well enough to accept the award in person, a live video feed from the stage allowed Steve to participate virtually (photo below).
As the award was announced to honor Steve, Members in the hall offered a loud and lengthy standing ovation to the honoree (photo below).

The remarks Steve had planned to deliver at the podium were, instead, read aloud by President Eric.

Steve's written remarks appear at right.
I want to thank everybody that I have worked with at our Spokane Association of REALTORS® over the last 25 years.

Many of you have sat at the table with me on committees, golfed with me at the tournaments, and attended local and state conventions together. I appreciate all of you.

My intent was always to raise the bar of our association members.

I have had an exceptional career, one that I didn't necessarily expect to get into. I went to a century 21 invitation party and met Gary Fox. That was it for me... shiny shoes, shiny cars and suits. I've always respected him and how he made us all better.

I also have to think the immortal Steve Flynn who suggested that I get involved at our Washington state Association level. That also has been an experience I will never forget.

I've met many many many people over this last time and I value many of you as friends, close friends! I will miss the involvement and I hope that more people step up and help lead this association. Thank you.

I am here to report that your clients, who are selling real property, don't have to worry about the new state capital gains tax.

Last session, Washington REALTORS® worked tirelessly to make sure that the sale of real property was exempted from the new state capital gains tax.

So, make sure to let your clients know that property has become an even better investment now that it is exempt from that state capital gains tax.

NAR Features SAR
in "Success Stories"
The National Association of REALTORS®, this week, highlighted the work of the Spokane Association of REALTORS® as exemplary in the field of Governmental Affairs and how local efforts can make a positive difference for Members.

In the blog post, our Spokane Association of REALTORS®' Government Affairs Director, Darin Watkins, reflects on the Spokane City Council’s recent attempt to eliminate consumer usage of natural gas within the city.

The drastic measure proposed in Spokane’s draft Sustainability Action Plan may have been well-intentioned, but it didn’t address the issue of how residents were supposed to be heating their homes.
