A NEW JSL SPOT FOR COFFEE TALK

By Jo Strausz Rosen

Jewish Senior Life celebrated the grand opening of the Hechtman II Coffee House in the Eli A. Scherr Activity Room on Tuesday, December 6. Philanthropist and friend of JSL, Eli Scherr attended the festivities along with more than 40 residents, staff, and community members. Eli spoke of his days on the Jewish Apartments and Services Board and his delight in contributing to the lifestyle we enjoy on our JSL campuses.

The room, once a place for residents to come and take part in activities, has been transformed into a cozy coffee house and meeting space. The energy in the room was upbeat. Dignitaries included West Bloomfield Township Supervisor Steve Kaplan, Treasurer Teri Weingarten, Clerk Debbie Binder, and Greater West Bloomfield Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Suzanne Levine. They all noted the joy in the air and commented repeatedly how delighted they were to participate in the ceremony.

Eli proudly cut the ribbon on the gorgeous new space and invited one and all to come in, drink coffee, enjoy mandelbread, and play the games provided on each table.

To Our Nurses and Social Workers

It is a mitzvah to publicize those who perform virtuous deeds.

We are in the third year since Covid has forced us to become more resilient. Around the globe, people have done all they could to protect themselves and their families.

I want to take this opportunity to deeply acknowledge our dedicated nurses and social workers for weathering the overwhelming Covid storms for all those dear seniors under their care.

Their work has been enormous and the energy they exerted is truly remarkable.

There are two select caregivers who are mentioned in the Torah, Shifah and Puah, the sister and mother of the great leader Moses. They were tender, caring, and forthcoming in serving the people. Their names denote their love and skillful care that they so beautifully applied to those for whom they cared. Shifrah and Puah mean “to cry” and “to coo” with the patient.

You, our precious nurses and social workers, have been on the frontline battle grounds, fighting this pandemic. We acknowledge, praise, and recognize your self-sacrifice for those whom you are serving. Often you took charge with little notice, and much was asked of you.

May you and your families be blessed. May your generous deeds laud you and grant all your needs in a most bountiful manner.

L’Chaim!

More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
