Tomorrow: Brookline Operating Override

Brookline has an important town election tomorrow, Tuesday, May 2. Residents will be voting on Question 2A, an operating override for the FY24 budget. It includes a request from the Public Schools of Brookline for $3.7M to cover essentials like teacher salaries.

If the override does NOT pass with a YES vote, the BHS community, including students and teachers, will be significantly impacted. Much of the extraordinary, teacher-driven innovation that the BHS Innovation Fund supports will be in jeopardy. For instance, it's likely that:
  • BHS will be forced to focus on core classes at the expense of many courses that make BHS an exceptional school. For example, there will be a lack of staffing for Rethinking the Restaurant, Social Justice, and Global Leadership next year.
  • Students will not be able to double up in a subject. For example, Juniors will not be able to take Biology and AP Chemistry. This also impacts Fund course offerings as many are the second class students take in a subject.
  • Class sizes will increase across College Prep/Standard, Honors, and Advanced/AP courses.
  • Student support personnel will have an increased caseload.
  • There will be a decline in teacher morale and retention, impacting teaching and students.

Given the importance of this ballot question, we hope you'll get to the polls tomorrow. You can learn more about Question 2A by visiting the town's website or watching a recent presentation by School Superintendent Linus Guillory.
