TEENS ENTER SHAVED ICE SNOWIE BUSINESS

While most teens are buying iPads and the latest mobile phones, 18-year-old Axel Osnaya and 17-year-old Sincere Lathers have spent the last two years saving up and investing in their shaved ice business, Snowie!

With support from the Southeast YouthSource Center, Axel (pictured left) and Sincere (pictured right) launched their business in Fall 2022. Now, the young entrepreneurs want to expand their business so that they may attend large-scale events and work their way up to opening their own brick and mortar someday- and along the way, hire other young entrepreneurs like themselves.

“We are reaching out to companies in the sports industries such as football, baseball, soccer stadiums, as well as other events and promoters such as concerts, conventions, and fairs, to give us the opportunity to operate our business at events,” Axel said.

NY CAKE POPS OPENS SHOP ON BEST COAST

With guidance from the Pico-Union/Westlake BusinessSource Center (BSC), East-coast based NY Cake Pops has expanded their presence from New York City into the Los Angeles Area.

NY Cake Pops is owned by Lerida Mojica (pictured above) and Robert Rodriguez. Lerida first came to the US from Mexico in 2003 and met her husband, Robert, in the same year. She first began making cake pops for her children’s birthday parties and immediately noticed the outpouring of requests and positive feedback from friends and family.

“I really like that we’ve become a family tradition for some; serving birthday parties, graduations, weddings, and even family gatherings. It makes us feel like we’re accepted into a larger family, being able to provide a small pop of happiness one bite at a time. Thanks to the Pico-Union/Westlake BSC, we can extend our family into Los Angeles.

CANOGA PARK JOB FAIR A SUCCESS!

In partnership with the CA Employment Development Department (EDD) and the Canoga Park WorkSource Center (WSC), the EWDD Employer Services Unit recently held a hugely successful job fair attended by more than 220 job seekers and more than 40 employers.

“I couldn’t let the week go by without expressing my heartfelt thanks to each and everyone one of you, for the support and assistance each of you provided to ensure we had a successful Job Fair event!” said Alexis Carter, Deputy Division Chief of the CA EDD LA/Coastal Workforce Services Division.

The Canoga Park WSC location is temporarily closed, so the event was held at the West Valley Occupational Center. The event was designed to remind the community that while the Canoga Park WSC does not currently have a storefront, the WSC is still open to provide valuable resources to the community. Virtual services and limited in-person services are available while the WSC transitions to a new location. The Canoga Park WSC is operated by EWDD contractor Equus Workforce Solutions.
