Bonnie Prince Charlie: A Life by Peter Pininski

The life of one of Scotland's most romantic and tragic figures. King James II's eldest legitimate grandson, Prince Charles Edward Stuart, known everywhere as 'Bonnie Prince Charlie', achieved international fame at the age of twenty five as the man who by his charisma, daring and energy led the Rising of 1745 against George II which all but succeeded in restoring his exiled royal family - the Stuarts - to their thrones of Scotland, England and Ireland. The romance of this dramatic military episode and the legend of the prince's extraordinary months on the run in the Western Highlands after his defeat at Culloden in 1746, eclipse the deeply human story of a brilliant but flawed man. Vital, magnanimous and sensitive in victory, yet scarred as a youth by the anorexia which killed his mother, his defeat in successive risings led to an alcoholism which destroyed Charles's heroic qualities and all his early promise. Prince Charles Edward's life is often focused on the 1745 Rising. But this new biography charts his early life and reveals the Polish origin of his astonishing dynamism and brittle psyche, inherited from his Polish princess-mother, set against the multi-cultural upbringing of his father's exiled British court in Rome and the international network of his pan-European cousins, friends, freemasons and bankers who throughout his life financed and tried to further his ever-more doomed cause. Pininski's new life of Charles also vividly relates the story of the prince's only child and heir and three hidden grandchildren whose previously untold lives were described by the Daily Mail as 'one of the best-kept secrets in Scottish history'.

NEW MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Aedan MacDonnell is a professional musician and has been a popular attraction in the Scottish community here in Southern California for years.  Aedan’s ancestors emigrated from Scotland in the 1600’s, but it was Celtic music that rekindled her Scottish roots. Aedan both plays and teaches music, including the harp and the piano.

At the heart of the St. Andrew’s Society of Los Angeles is the intersection of Scotland and Southern California.  And Aedan’s career is emblematic of that connection, having played her harp in Outlander (a television show set in the Scottish Highlands) and also having taught Mayim Bialik to play the harp for the television show The Big Bang Theory.  Aedan also plays in an all-female Celtic band, Ban Cara, and with various other groups.

When she is not teaching, playing music – or writing and producing a Samhain (Celtic Halloween) show each year – Aedan enjoys spending time in nature, hiking and camping in the mountains.  Closer to home, she loves gardening, and hopes to top her personal record from last year of a 2 ½ foot long zucchini.

Aedan looks forward to reconnecting with old friends as in-person Society events resume, so be sure to keep an eye (and an ear) out for her!

SCOTTISH INVENTIONS

Color Photography:

While Scottish mathematical physicist James Clerk Maxwell was well known among his peers for his achievements in the classical theory of electromagnetic radiation, he also presented the world's first color photograph in 1861 at a Royal Institution lecture on color theory. In collaboration with photographer Thomas Sutton, Maxwell had an image of a tartan ribbon photographed three times through red, blue, and yellow filters, then recombined the images into one color composite. Because of this, Maxwell is considered the founder of the theory of additive color. Today the original photograph can be viewed at a small museum in the house where Maxwell was born located in Edinburgh.
