Ocean Oil Pour, 2019
Oil and charcoal on photograph
My name is Krista Longden. I am in my senior year pursuing a BA in Education with minors in Psychology, Special Education, and Sociology. I have always had a passion for the arts and theater and an interest in what art means to each individual artist. I have always been drawn to art that portrays unique ideas and messages, which I believe Ocean Oil Pour represents.

Ocean Oil Pour speaks volumes about how we treat our planet and what may result from our actions and lack of knowledge.
When looking at this work, you can see a beautiful photograph of an ocean behind the oil and charcoal. The use of the oil and charcoal here is abrupt and bold and placed with robust and deliberate purpose. Cardelus applies crude oil to the photograph, disturbing the photo to act as a representation of extreme weather conditions and man-made pollution occurring in nature. Ocean Oil Pour and the message conveyed through the use of mediums stood out to me and sparked my interest and attention. I believe this piece allows you to look at the beauty of the ocean, while the obstructive, bold use of crude oil has the power to divert the attention from the ocean to what’s happening to it.
