Ethics in Breathwork - Part 1
Jim explains that knowledge of the mechanics and philosophy of guiding clients safely to their goals and empowering them are important parts of ethical breath coaching. He gives further examples of challenges to one's scope of practice.
Jim Morningstar, PhD, recounts his introduction to and enthusiasm for the profession of breathwork. This included seeing the need for training standards and ethics after witnessing the many and varied ways people were being taken into altered states of consciousness during breathing sessions in the 1990's. Together with Jessica Dibb, they brought together a group of trainers from 22 different training programs at the Global Inspiration Conference in the United States in 2001and began the organization which evolved into the Global Professional Breathwork Alliance, which continues to help set training and ethics standards for the field of breathwork. Jim details how one's "moral compass" grows from one's view of reality, model of healing, internal degree of safety and position towards societal rules of behavior. The keys being authentic caring toward oneself and others coupled with the willingness to examine one's own motives, tell the truth and ask for help when being unsure. .

“This breath of life that breathes in each one of us is what one basically calls freedom. In biology it’s called Life, in affectivity it’s called Love, in psychology it’s called Consciousness, and in theology it’s called God. The difficulty is to bring these all together within everyone’s understanding.” ~Alfred Tomatis, M.D.
