PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
I have been reminded recently of the value of membership in the AIA. The AIA is our professional organization. I am sure we ask ourselves what value the $600-$700 we pay each year for our membership or the membership of firm members. I know that I do. My most recent conclusion is simple, and I am sure that you will say cliche’ but in the simplest of terms, we are better together. I am sure that many of you have heard me say that the recent past has made the value of being an AIA member more obvious than ever.

Last year, and even now, the local and national components have shared information amongst us, and to a degree with our collective clients on maintaining our businesses through the challenges of the pandemic in our country and the world. We came together and shared our experiences and more importantly we shared our tips on how to keep our employees engaged and actively working, wherever they were or are located. These efforts continue to evolve and be part of our focus as businesses, especially as design businesses, leading and directing others through our designs. That sharing of information is an exemplary function of the AIA and its members. We are helping each other survive.

Speaking of sharing, this year’s AIA Conference on Architecture took on an unfamiliar form. It consisted of four separate days of conference speeches and educational sessions spread over two months’ time. It has been held remotely, both out of need and in an effort to evolve and become more available to more members. I say that it was more available because it did not involve the expense of travel and lodging in a large metropolitan area, and the cost of attendance was reduced. The jury is still out on its success, but I am sure that it will continue to evolve. EMERGING PROFESSIONAL CORNER
Hello,

Summer is almost over, which means the AIA Mid Summer Conference has also concluded. I had the pleasure of attending this year, and I must say, I was not ready for what the hotel and the island has to offer. The best part was enjoying the front porch view, and swimming at the newly renovated Esther Williams swimming pool. While swimming, we happened to meet the landscape architect who worked on the renovation and discussed the railings and plant choices. It was so great meeting friends at the Pink Pony, discussing pressing issues at the board meeting, attending a wine tasting, and watching an award reception at the Jockey Club. I was able to present the research article my focus group and I have been working on the past couple of months, and give an update on the trivia night we hosted at Studio Detroit. I had such a fantastic time thanks to all the work AIA Michigan put into hosting and planning this event, I look forward to attending next year!

In the meantime, we are busy interviewing for another article, planning a mentorship event, and planning another trivia event. Stay tuned for some of these events as we transition to fall. If you’re as busy as we are at Studio Detroit, the time will fly and the next time you hear from me we will be suiting up in our snowsuits and preparing for the cold. Stay safe and soak in the last few rays of summer!

Thanks for your time,

Nicole Tischler
