Bones and Stones in 3rd Grade

For years, Joy Hakim’s excellent textbook, The Story of Us, has been a centerpiece of Peabody 3rd grade social studies explorations. However, believing that students would benefit from more hands-on activities, creative projects, and critical thinking to enhance and deepen their learning, Ms. Dreyfus and Ms. Wilde have begun complimenting The Story of Us with the “Bones and Stones” curriculum, a more interactive approach that offers 3rd graders the chance to do more of what they love most: work together, use their imaginations, and engage in play. Using the “Bones and Stones” curriculum as a segue into their in-depth study of indigenous peoples of North America, Ms. Dreyfus, and Ms. Wilde are working to develop an understanding of our shared ancestry and the universal qualities of humanity. In exploring how the geography, climate, and flora and fauna of a region influence art, spiritual belief systems, storytelling, and other aspects of culture, they hope to help students get a sense for the evolution of culture and thought from early modern humans to indigenous peoples of the past and present. Just your typical 3rd grade advanced anthropology! Several Opportunities to participate with Peabody Partners this November

All Peabody families are invited to join us for the first gathering of the Peabody Partners this Saturday, November 6th, from 3:45-6:00 PM at the Monticello-Saunders trail just two miles east of the school. On this and every first Saturday afternoon of the year, Partners will join together in appreciating and supporting the welfare of our local natural resources. For this particular session, we will meet at the parking lot on Route 20 just across from PVCC, where Peabody parent Nicola McGoff will lead us on a hike over to the Secluded Farm Trails, where we might also have a chance to support litter clean-up efforts. If you plan to join please bring a pair of gloves, layers of clothing (it’ll be brisk, and temperatures will drop as the sun goes down), a bottle of water, and a snack for everyone in your party. If you have any questions or a tendency to run late and want to make sure we wait for you, just send a quick email to Eric Anderson

AND, later this month, we will partner with the Charlottesville chapter of Meals on Wheels, a community-based nonprofit organization that delivers hot meals to people throughout Charlottesville and Albemarle County who are vulnerable to hunger and isolation because of decreased mobility. The effort will start on Thursday, November 18th with an afterschool gathering of Peabody families at the school to create greeting cards and messages for Meals’ clients. These cards provide a real emotional boost for persons who are often isolated around the holidays.

For the following week, Peabody families may sign up to deliver hot meals to Meals on Wheels clients on any or all of the days of Thanksgiving week (November 22nd, 23rd, 24th, and/or 26th). For planning purposes, though, we will need families to sign up here by November 10th if they are interested in helping out any day that week.

Our sincere thanks to Nicola McGoff, Emily Harpster, Beth Baluarte, and Lauren Baum for all their support in making these two opportunities possible.

Make an Impact: Annual Fund 2021-22!

The 2021-22 Annual Fund is now officially underway! We are so thankful for everyone that made an impact last year with over $150,000 in gifts made to our wonderful school!

Your participation in the Peabody Annual Fund provides essential operating support to Peabody. Income from tuition does not cover all of our operating expenses. The generosity of our community supports almost everything that keeps Peabody running, from salaries and classroom technology to arts and supplies. Lastly, the Fund supports financial aid as we ensure that any student can share in the Peabody experience. We hope that you will support Peabody in this area and that you will keep in mind that your Annual Fund gift, of any size, really matters to the school. Let's all MAKE AN IMPACT!

Thank you in advance for your consideration of a gift to Peabody School for the 2021-22 year and for being such strong supporters of our wonderful school!
Happy Diwali!

We are grateful that Anya Kapoor and her family put together a beautiful display at the front of the school. We are so thankful to have our students learn more about this festival and its traditions. Thank you!
Vaccination Update

We hope many of you were able to secure an appointment through one of these avenues already! Peabody is also partnering with BRHD, Mountainview Elementary, and Tandem Friends School to host a vaccination clinic next Friday, November 12th from 4-7 pm. We have not yet been given the final number of doses our students will be allotted, but we have recently been informed that it will be significantly lower than we had hoped. BRHD will be giving us instructions on how to prioritize certain parts of our school community for these appointments (essentially students who are at higher risk of developing complications from COVID-19. Parents of those children will have a slight head start in signing up for our available appointments and then we will open it up to the entire community. We have not yet received these criteria or the sign-up link from BRHD yet, but we hope to receive it shortly. If interested, we would encourage you to sign-up for an appointment at any location with availability.

Once your student has received the vaccine, please feel free to use this corrected link to the google form or email Nurse Tara directly (tara.montgomery@peabodyschool.org).
