Our Mission Is To Maintain And Strengthen The City's Diversity, Equity, And Accountability.
Greetings!

I know we don't usually email you this often, but we have so many things going on at LA Civil Rights that I just had to share!

On Saturday, we are joining dozens of Angelenos for Tom LaBonge Day of Service - a citywide celebration of former Councilmember LaBonge and his spirit of service & love for LA. We lost Tom this past January, but on Saturday, three days after his birthday, we will show the city that his legacy of service is still going strong - and I hope to see you there.

We also joined the Black Workers Center, UCLA Labor Center, and many other diverse workers from across Southern California to highlight inequities facing Black, Latinx and immigrant workers in particular. As we rebuild our economy, we can't go back to a "normal" that wasn't working for all of us - and we are doing all we can to build equity and opportunity for workers in Los Angeles.

Keep the faith and keep the fight,

- Capri Maddox
Executive Director,
Civil + Human Rights and Equity Department

PS: Next Monday is Indigenous People's Day, a holiday here in Los Angeles and a time to reflect on the indigenous communities whose land was taken from them. Los Angeles sits on Tongva, Kizh and Chumash land. Find out more at native-land.ca.
Tom LaBonge Day of Service
Join us for the Tom LaBonge Day of Service on October 9, 2021!

Tom LaBonge - affectionately known as 'Mr. LA' - represented the best of what LA could be. He was tireless in his service to others, and dedicated his life to service and love for LA.

In the spirit of Mr. LA, and to celebrate his birthday, the City of Los Angeles is hosting five simultaneous community clean ups across LA on October 9th. Join city leaders, volunteers, neighbors and friends to make our communities shine a little brighter and show our LA love. Tools will be provided, and masks will be required.

This event is co-hosted by the Civil + Human Rights and Equity Department and the Department of Public Works, as well as Councilmembers Nithya Raman, Mitch O’Farrell, Paul Krekorian, Monica Rodriguez, Joe Buscaino, Marqueece Harris Dawson and John Lee, Sister Cities Association of Los Angeles, LADWP, and Victory Outreach Church of North Hollywood.

Build Back Better for All
Last week, the United States Congress considered an infrastructure bill to build back our nation. At the same time, we joined Black Worker Center, UCLA Labor Center, Domestic Workers Coalition, and workers from across the Southland to call for an equitable economic recovery at the Build Back Better for All rally. We know that while the white unemployment rate is declining, Black unemployment is rising - and many of those workers who risked their health as essential workers are now the first to face job loss and lack of opportunity.

As we seek to rebuild this nation and its economy, it's critical that we do so in a way that is inclusive and equitable to the workers of color who served us throughout the pandemic. Learn more about the LA Black Worker Center at lablackworkercenter.org.
