Advocacy is critical in ensuring our legislative representatives are creating policies and laws that strengthen families and protect children in Arizona. Last month, PCAAZ Executive Director Claire Louge graduated from Leading for Change, a fellowship that teaches legislative advocacy skills to leaders advancing social justice in Arizona. Through the program, fellows create a vision statement that anchors their focus and application of the skills they learn. Claire’s vision statement: "All families have what they need to nurture their children."

Impact Story
Child Abuse Prevention Month
On Saturday, April 30, 2022, Prevent Child Abuse Arizona celebrated Child Abuse Prevention month with a Pinwheel Party in Prescott Valley (home to our headquarters). This free event was hosted by Yavapai Communities for Kids, a Child Abuse Prevention Council made up of dedicated volunteers and partner agencies.
“This is the first time I’ve ever attended this event and I thought it was remarkable. I enjoyed interacting with the parents as well as the children. ” says a family resource agency who participated in the event.

The law that authorizes MIECHV will expire in September 2022. The House and Senate committees with jurisdiction over MIECHV will begin to hold hearings in the spring in preparation for the reauthorization of the program, which funds early childhood home visiting programs across the nation. Early childhood home visiting programs such as Healthy Families, Parents as Teachers, and Nurse Family Partnership strengthen families through guidance, knowledge, resource referral and support in their children’s earliest years.
Prevent Child Abuse America is requesting that Congress:
- Increase MIECHV funding over the next five years to reach more families and better support the workforce
- Double the tribal funds within MIECHV from 3% to 6%
- Continue to allow virtual home visiting with model fidelity as an option for service delivery.

The federal Public Health Emergency will likely end in 2022, which means that many families may be dropped from their AHCCCS and KidsCare coverage if they are not able to be reached. They may also need to fill out forms and pay premiums that were waived during the pandemic. Children’s Action Alliance has created a toolkit to help you communicate these changes to families so that they don’t lose their coverage and they know what to expect.

The Building Better Childhoods Toolkit is intended to support organizations in their interaction with media, the general public, and other stakeholders when speaking about childhood adversity. It is based on the 2021 brief titled “Reframing Childhood Adversity: Promoting Upstream Approaches” developed by the FrameWorks Institute in partnership with Prevent Child Abuse America and Social Current (formerly the Alliance for Strong Families and Communities). Download the toolkit to learn effective ways to discuss the importance of child abuse prevention!
