With this week’s BobBlast, we are ending our multi-part series on Contrast! We had a great time with this contrast series—Part One featured “Big and Little”; Part Two dove into “Hard Edges and Soft Edges.” I did demos on each subject and explained why and how I use these techniques in my own paintings. So, this BobBlast is Part Three, all about Busy Areas and Quiet Areas.
Does your painting feel too busy? Is it chaotic? I refer to this as “Visual Clutter”—this busyness entertains me with attention-getting lines, lots of color and shapes, all vying for my interest.
Balance this visual clutter by painting Visual Rest next to the busy sections. The quiet sections are graphic relief after being overwhelmed in the noisy areas of Visual Clutter.
The idea for this technique for my work came from the intentions of the designer Fredric Law Olmstead for New York City’s Central Park. “Busy, daily and noisy life of NYC next to a relaxed, inviting and quiet green space." It’s that back and forth I like playing with.
There are so many thoughts and intentions to convey while painting—this series on Contrast are just some ideas I use to make my paintings.
