PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT & NETWORKING
Female residents, you are invited to this inaugural in-person networking event on Oct. 21, 6:30-8:30 pm ET, designed especially for you by the resident member on the MAFP Board of Directors, Hima Chopra, MD, chief resident at McLaren Oakland Family Medicine Residency. Hear from female family physicians at different stages of their careers about gender-specific considerations such as how to negotiate a contract and pay, family planning, preparing for maternity leave, work-life balance, and answers to questions that you have. A live webinar is also offered on Sunday, Oct. 24, 6:30-8 pm ET, for those unable to attend the in-person event in Northville.

On Sept. 16, the American Academy of Family Physicians hosted a virtual livestream roundtable with U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, MD, MBA. Discussion focused on why the family medicine specialty is critical for fully optimizing healthcare, the role of residents during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond, physician wellness, and more. Log into your AAFP account to watch the recorded livestream discussion.

This year marks the American Medical Student Association’s 22nd National Primary Care Week (NPCW). The theme, “Health Outside of the Hospital,” centers on the impact of COVID-19 on communities and healthcare. AMSA works closely with AAFP to make NPCW a successful initiative for the promotion of primary care across the country. Click here for the weeklong programming schedule. Is your program doing something special for National Primary Care Week? Email details to MAFP Director of Communications & Member Services, Dana Lawrence, at dlawrence@mafp.com.

AAFP and United Health Foundation’s Leading Physician Well-being certificate program seeks to foster physician leadership skills to promote and maintain stability, boost team morale, and support well-being in the workplace. Active members are eligible to apply; residents are eligible if they have a letter of support from their program director. One-hundred family physicians will be selected to participate in the 10-month series of three core sessions and online learning activities in 2022.

Now in its 44th year, the annual Michigan Family Medicine Research Day is designed to encourage and assist new researchers and scholars in family medicine, nursing, and the behavioral sciences, facilitating learning and the exchange of ideas that may improve patterns of practice and the health of patients. Stay tuned for details from Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine, the lead host of the 2022 event.

If you are a resident in your final year of training, as of Jan. 1 in the year you will graduate, you can begin to earn continuing medical education that will count toward your active physician AAFP membership requirement. Be sure to check out CME events and webinars offered by AAFP and MAFP. Active members must report at least 150 credits of approved CME every three calendar years.

In addition to live webinars and events, MAFP and Family Medicine Foundation of Michigan also offer on-demand CME and professional development webinars to ensure members have access to information and training when in-person events are not an option due to travel restrictions.

Our on-demand webinar line-up includes the year-long "Stay on Course: Your Ticket to Family Medicine CME" package approved for 13 CME credits, as well as individual webinars on pain and symptom management, human trafficking, and medical ethics, for which training is required for medical licensure and renewal in Michigan. Other on-demand webinars focus on business of medicine and leadership topics. Do you have a topic you would like to learn more about? Email your webinar suggestion to info@mafp.com.
LEADERSHIP
A virtual meet-n-greet held on Sept. 30 kicked off the second cohort of the MAFP Resident Ambassadors Program. This program is designed to strengthen the relationship between MAFP and family medicine residency programs in the state, and to facilitate communications to increase residents’ awareness of the Academy, its benefits for residents, and how it supports residents and new physicians. Twenty-seven family medicine residents representing 24 of Michigan’s 38 residency programs are participating in the 2021-2022 program. If your program isn’t represented, it’s not too late to apply or appoint a resident ambassador.
AWARDS
The Center for the History of Family Medicine is sponsoring a contest to encourage medical students and family medicine residents to write scholarly essays relevant to the history of family medicine in the United States. The first-place winner will receive $1,000 and the second-place winner will receive a $500 award.
