Helping Your Pet Maintain a Healthy Weight
Second Chance Veterinarian Offers Tips

NORTH BROOKFIELD, MA (April 18, 2022) – Does your pet need to drop a few pounds? Second Chance Animal Services Veterinarian Dr. Jackie Celmer explains why it’s important to help your pet maintain a healthy weight and what to do if your pet needs to drop a few pounds.

Obesity amongst domestic dogs and cats in America is becoming more common than veterinarians would like. A recent study showed that in America about 60% of cats and 56% of dogs have been classified as obese by a veterinarian. So, what makes my pet obese? A pet is classified as obese if it is deemed at least 10-20% heavier than their ideal weight. Obesity is not only a primary issue but can predispose our pets to many secondary issues like diabetes, thyroid disease, heart disease, joint pain which can worsen arthritis, and weakening a pets immune system making them more susceptible to secondary illnesses.

So, what do we do if our pet is overweight? The first recommendation is to evaluate what we feed our furry friends at home. Step one is to actually measure what we are feeding our pets. Most of us use a “scoop” that is some unknown measurement, and we provide a scoop or two into the dish. It is very important to quantify how much we are actually feeding with an appropriate measuring cup. Secondarily it is good to mention that most commercial dog and cat foods have feeding recommendations on the back of the bag which should be fed for the pets age and ideal body weight. Ideal body weight is our “goal weight”, so if our pet is 15 pounds and we want them to be 10 pounds we need to be feeding for a 10-pound animal and not a 15-pound animal. If you are having trouble knowing how much you should be feeding your pet feel free to reach out to one of us for a more precise diet plan.

Not only is dieting key but like in humans, diet needs to be paired with exercise. We should try to take our dogs for walks or exercise them in the yard daily. If the weather is bad, try to play with them in the house for at least 15 minutes a day. Cats are a bit more challenging to get to exercise on demand. Getting a tall cat tree can entice our furry felines to jump and climb more which can aide in weight loss. Additionally, wand toys and laser pointers can be used to get our cats moving. I usually recommend having them chase the laser dot for at least 10-15 minutes once to twice daily.

Only about 10% of pets diagnosed with obesity are successful at losing weight and over 40% of those who lost weight gained it back within a year. It is important to remember that weight loss takes time, do not get discouraged, it is a lot of work, but your furry friend will thank you in the long run!

Second Chance to Celebrate Adopt a Shelter Pet Day at Timberyard Birthday Event
Nonprofit to Distribute Donated Pet Beds in Honor of Alum Podunk

EAST BROOKFIELD, MA (April 21, 2022) – Second Chance Animal Services will be on hand Saturday, April 30th at Timberyard Brewing Company to help celebrate both National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day and the birthday of a local alum of Second Chance, Podunk the Brewery Cat. The mobile adoption unit will have some great pets available for adoption and Second Chance staff will be distributing pet beds that were donated by BARK, Inc. in partnership with GreaterGood Charities to promote adoptions of local pups.

Chief Development Officer Lindsay Doray said that when she got the call about a large donation of pet beds, she reached out to Timberyard for help. “We knew that the donation could help a lot of pets, but there was no way we could store them all at any of our facilities. I’m grateful to our friends at Timberyard for accepting, storing and helping us pass them out here in our hometown at this special event celebrating Podunk and shelter pets.”

Doray said Second Chance is grateful to BARK and GreaterGood Charities for the donation that will provide a comfy bed for those welcoming new pets from the nonprofit’s adoption center a short distance from Timberyard.

Doray says Second Chance is committed to helping keep people and pets together and hopes the beds will provide comfort to pets and educate pet owners about the resources available for their pets. Second Chance Animal Services was selected by Greater Good Charities, in partnership with BARK, Inc, to receive a donation of dog beds to help enhance adoption efforts and temporary experiences for local pups.

This local donation is part of BARK’S initial $10 million commitment in BARK products to enhance and expand initiatives by Greater Good Charities’ partner shelters and rescues to drive adoptions. GreaterGood Charities is working with partner shelters nationwide to utilize thousands of BARK’s memory foam dog beds to help shelters enhance adoption drives and create dog adoption starter kits when individuals and families adopt new dogs. In addition, the nonprofit organization is offering BARK dog beds to pet-friendly domestic violence and homeless shelters to help families in crisis create a safe haven for their pup.

BARK’s partnership with Greater Good Charities is an expansion of the company’s ongoing work in giving back to dogs and their people. Since 2017, working with an internal network of over 1,000 partners in dogs and animal welfare across the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico, BARK has donated around $1 million annually in goods, services, and direct funding in order to help dogs stay in homes. GreaterGood Charities, works to amplify the good in the world, and has provided more than $400 million in impact, including cash grants, in-kind supplies, and programmatic support, to over 5,000 charitable partners in 121 countries since 2007.

Second Chance will be at the event on Saturday, April 30th from 11am to 3pm, welcoming visitors to the mobile adoption unit and distributing beds free of charge to pet owners.

May 13 & 14: Book Sale at Jacob Edwards Library

After a 3 year wait, the Friends of Jacob Edwards Library is FINALLY holding a book sale May 13 and 14 at Jacob Edwards Library, 236 Main Street in Southbridge. Friday hours are 9am-5pm. The sale will conclude on Saturday 9am to noon. A large variety of books will be available: fiction and non-fiction, children’s books, CD’s and DVD’s as well as canvas tote bags. The books have been sorted by category, and the mysteries are even sorted by author. We are asking for cash donations only. The canvas totes sell for $5 and patrons can fill them with as many books as they can fit. Children’s books are free. Donations of books are not accepted at this time- our goal is to get rid of the books we already have- and fill your library with them. The sale includes gently read book donations. Proceeds from the book sale benefit programs supported by the Friends, i.e., museum passes, children’s room programs, receptions and adult programs, library equipment, etc. Support library programs- fill your book shelves with quality books- at great prices!

For more information, call 508-764-5426 or check the library website: www.jacobedwardslibrary.org or Jacob Edwards Library on facebook. It’s been a tough couple of years, with Covid protocols, the Friends are very excited to be running the sale again.
