From the Flight Deck
Greetings!
It’s hard to believe that we are almost at the end of the marking period! It’s important to keep in mind that any missing work for this marking period should be turned in prior to Thursday, October 7th. Report cards will be posted to Skyward on Tuesday, October 19th. Also, any student that was not present last week will need to complete their Science progress monitoring assessment, which was administered on Thursday, September 30th. Students in Algebra and Geometry will take their first progress monitoring assessment on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week.

The character development focus for October is cooperation. Cooperation supports students with self-awareness, social awareness, and relationship skills. A study conducted in 2010 found that, on most occasions, the outcome on a given task can be improved when two people have helped each other instead of working on their own. There’s really nothing special about this finding. At Legacy, one of our deliberate practice elements to improve student outcomes is through the promotion of cooperative learning. Students can complete tasks and study on their own, sure, but when they partner with a peer, learning takes place at higher levels than when completed individually.

Cooperation also promotes teamwork, a vital component to any organization’s success. Thanks to the support and dedication that Legacy receives from our community partner and parents alike, we work as a cohesive team for the betterment of our students.

Thank you for your cooperation to support all of our students at Legacy.

FIND YOUR VISION
One of the great dreamers of the twentieth century was Walt Disney. Any person who could create the first sound cartoon, first all-color cartoon, and first animated featured-length motion picture is definitely someone with vision. But Disney's greatest masterpieces of vision were Disneyland and Walt Disney World. And the spark for that vision came from an unexpected place.

Back when Walt's two daughters were young, he used to take them to an amusement park in the Los Angles area on Saturday mornings. His girls loved it, and he did too. Amusement parks are a kid's paradise, with wonderful atmosphere: the smell of popcorn and cotton candy, the gaudy colors of signs advertising rides, and the sounds of kids screaming as the roller coaster plummets over a hill.

Walt was especially captivated by the carousel. As he approached it, he saw a blur of bright images racing around to the tune of energetic calliope music. But when he got closer and the carousel stopped, he could see that his eye had been fooled. He observed shabby horses with cracked and chipped paint. And he noticed that only the horses on the outside row moved up and down. The others stood lifeless, bolted to the floor.

The cartoonist's disappointment inspired him with a grand vision. In his mind's eye he could see an amusement park where the illusion didn't evaporate, where children and adults could enjoy a carnival atmosphere without the seedy side that accompanies some circuses or traveling carnivals. His dream became Disneyland.

You see, for Disney, vision was never a problem. Because of his creativity and desire for excellence, he always saw what could be. If you ever lack vision, look inside yourself. Draw on your natural gifts and desires. It is there, if you look deep enough. Disney's vision could be summarized as "No chipped paint. All the horses jump."
