Winter Weather Prep
The winter season officially kicks off next week, even though it certainly doesn't feel like it outside. With temperatures still well above normal, it is still a good time to start preparing for any potential extreme weather events that could pop up in the next few months. Here are two things you can do locally to prepare:

EMERGENCY ALERTS:
The City of Lakeway recently launched a new localized emergency alert platform through Voyent Alert! The system allows you to receive localized emergency alert information either through an app, text message, email notification or a landline voice call. When receiving an alert, a map and additional emergency-related information will be included in the post. If you have not yet signed up for the free service, it is encouraged. You must be registered in order to receive alerts. The sign-up process is quick and easy. CLICK HERE to register today on the device you prefer.

PREPAREDNESS EVENT:
The Young Men's Service League Cavalier's Chapter (YMSL) at Lake Travis High School in partnership with the City's Office of Emergency Management are hosting a Winter Weather Preparedness supply give-away event on Saturday, Jan. 8, 2022 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Lakeway Justice Complex located at 104 Cross Creek. Residents will be able to pick up important basic supplies like firewood bundles, blankets, hand wipes, water and first aid kits, among other items. Quantities will be limited, and distribution will be on a first-come, first-served basis. CLICK HERE for more information on the event.
Living with Coyotes
Social media discussions indicate a possible uptick in coyote sightings in the Lakeway area. In general, coyotes are not a threat to humans, but can be to smaller pets. Be sure to keep your small cats or dogs indoors if you think coyotes could easily access your property. Also, similar to the deer, avoid feeding coyotes or other wildlife. On your property, limit access to your trash, compost piles, outdoor pet food, dirty BBQ grills and clean up fruit and nuts on the ground to keep coyotes off your property. If you spot a coyote, you can use these hazing methods to scare them away:

  • Maintain eye contact
  • Make noise - whistle, airhorn, yelling, clanging pots & pans
  • Wave your arms
  • Spray a hose at the animal
  • Throw something (not food) toward the animal (but don't hit them)
  • Be erratic and unpredictable
  • Be aggressive
  • Be persistent
  • Avoid hazing pups
  • Never use a gun or fireworks
