LIHEAP Weather Bulletin: Another
Major Storm Hits This Evening
Forecasters at the National Weather Service office in Reno are warning that a significant winter storm is poised to impact the Sierra this weekend, with the potential for several feet of snow from tonight into late Sunday. A Winter Storm Warning will be in effect from 10:00 this evening until 4:00a.m. Monday.
Heavy snow is expected here in Lassen, eastern Plumas, and eastern Sierra Counties. Total snow accumulations of 2 to 8 inches, except 1 to 3 feet above 5,000 feet are possible.
| |
|
At times during the storm winds will be gusting as high as 50mph.
Travel across the Sierra is not recommended this weekend and may be impossible at times. If you choose to do so, make sure to have proper supplies and plan for prolonged delays.
Winds will remain strong and gusty in the High Sierra with periods of stronger winds surfacing in valley locations. Whiteout conditions will be possible across the Sierra on Saturday due to intense winds and heavy snowfall.
Lower western Nevada valleys could see spillover rainfall Saturday as snow levels rise to 5000-6000 feet. Periods of moderate to heavy rainfall during this timeframe could create some nuisance flooding for urban and poor drainage areas. Snow levels will then rapidly drop to all western Nevada valley floors by Sunday morning which will provide the best chances for a few inches snow accumulation and travel impacts across lower valleys.
winds could cause tree damage.
The heaviest snowfall rates are anticipated on Saturday.

Fruit Growers Mill in the late 1940’s from an Eastman Studio Postcard | |
Logging Plants Close for Season
December 9, 1941
Fruit Growers Logging Camp No. 10, located about 35 miles northeast of here, has been shut down for the winter, according to A. I. Lucero, assistant resident manager of the Fruit Growers Supply Company.
The sawmill in Susanville will discontinue operations for the winter months, but most of the men employed will be retained to make necessary winter repairs at the plant, Lucero Said.
The supply of logs in the Fruit Growers pond is sufficient to start the mill again in February, according to the announcement.
At the Lassen Lumber and Box Company, H. W. Bridgford, resident manager said, “At the present time we have about the same amount of logs in deck as we had a year ago. This supply will last until sometime in March, 1942. The demand nor for lumber and shook is very light and we have no information at this time as to when the demand will improve.”
