Message from the Division President
Dear M&D Colleagues,
I am very thankful and honored to have the opportunity to serve you as the President of Manufacturing and Design Division.
First, I would like to thank all our members who volunteer to serve our M&D Division. You are our biggest asset and source of inspiration for our future generation of leaders – Our Student Members!
As a means of introduction, I want to take a step back on how I got involved with M&D Division before I share the goals for our Division during my tenure.
When I was a student (several years ago!), I was deeply inspired by all the hard work of my predecessors to promote M&D and IISE through multiple avenues: our annual conference, carefully thought-out workshops to benefit our community, webinars to share new knowledge, awards to recognize the deserving, and most importantly, building a sense of togetherness in our mission to advance manufacturing and design. This is my seventh year on the M&D Board, and it comes down to what I have learnt from our community:
We do what we have always done, pay it forward for our M&D community!
During my tenure as your M&D President, I aim to: (1) Increase industry participation within our Division, and (2) Establish a forum to share best practices in teaching and graduate school research of M&D topics to best serve our society. In addition, I will continue to promote our former M&D Board’s excellent efforts in successfully enhancing diversity within our division.
Please join me in welcoming our new volunteer M&D Board members! I am looking forward to working with our newest leadership team and ‘catching the bug’ from their awesome ideas and energy. We will highlight each of them through our current and upcoming newsletters. Finally, I am looking forward to seeing you all at IISE 2022! Stay tuned!
As your M&D President, it is my privilege to serve our vibrant M&D community. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me with your ideas or questions. You can email me at gum@psu.edu
Regards,
Guha

Highlights of 2021 M&D Town Hall Meeting
On May 24, 2021, the IISE Manufacturing and Design Division held our annual (virtual) Town Hall Meeting. The meeting started with both IISE and our M&D division acknowledging the hard work of all the members of the division through these difficult times during the COVID-19 pandemic. We also recognized our former M&D President, Dr. Iris Rivero who was honored as an IISE fellow, which recognizes outstanding leaders of the profession who have made significant, nationally recognized contributions to industrial and systems engineering.
We summarized the major activities of IISE M&D during this year’s conference. The Manufacturing and Design track organized 48 research presentations and 4 live sessions (including the virtual town hall meeting). The other 3 special sessions organized during the conference were introduced.

Highlights of Special Sessions at the 2021 IISE Annual Conference
and Expo!
At the 2021 IISE Annual Conference and Expo in May 2021, M&D hosted three special live sessions in addition to 48 research presentations.
Women and Leadership in Manufacturing and Design
This special live session invited six inspiring female leaders from both academia and industry as panelists. They were Dr. Iris Rivero from Rochester Institute of Technology, Dr. Eileen Van Aken from Virginia Tech, Dr. Janis Terpenny from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Dr. Susan Steadman from the Hershey Company, Ms. Mindy Holmes from Intel Corporation, Ms. Renee Thiesing from Simio LLC. This panel was hosted by Dr. Katie Basinger from University of Florida.
Each panelist shared three aspects of their suggestions for women professionals to take leadership roles in the field of manufacturing and design both in academia and industry. Subsequently, a live Q&A session was organized to answer questions from the audiences. Dr. Lourdes Medina concluded this special session by introducing the initiatives at IISE M&D for promoting women leadership in IISE.

Teaching Manufacturing and Design Hands-on Experiences on a Pandemic
This live session invited four panelists who were highly successful in teaching manufacturing and design courses during the pandemic. The panelists were Dr. Robert C. Voigt from, Denis Cormier from Rochester Institute of Technology, Dr. Abishek Balsamy Kamaraj from Kettering University, and Dr. Lourdes Medina from University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez. This panel was hosted by Dr. Wenmeng Tian from Mississippi State University.
The pandemic that started in 2020 has provided tremendous challenges and new opportunities in teaching manufacturing and design hands-on courses. Our panelists shared their own experiences in teaching hands-on M&D experiences during the pandemic. Their presentations were followed by a live Q&A session for the audience to ask questions regarding best teaching practices for manufacturing lab during the pandemic. There were over 190 attendees in this special session, which indicated the great interest our community showed to this important topic.
