Gary's Corner...

Well, June is here. This officially is the start of summer. This is the time of year that offshore fishing on humps, island tops, and reefs come into play in a big way. These fish have spawned and are headed back to deeper water or, at least, closer to deep water. This is the time of year to start targeting anything shady. Places like overhanging trees and dock fishing will be a big key as well. Popular ways to catch these fish will be worms rigged shaky head style, dropshotting, and Texas rigged. Jigs will be very popular, as well. This is a great time of year to always start with some topwater baits early and finish with late in the day. If you get a good overcast day, the topwater bite might last all day. A really popular summertime technique here in Texas is Carolina rigged baits. This isn’t limited to Texas waters. It works everywhere.

The bluegill are up and this is a great time to get the youngsters out on the water. Toss a bobber with a cricket or worms near any visible brush or structure and you’ll find bluegill. I’m not sure there’s anything that beats a kid getting excited as a bobber goes under on the run. This is known to excite a few adults as well. 😊

We’ve gotten some of our new products in as well. We have both casting and spinning reels. The casting come in both left- and right-hand models and several gear ratios. Both the casting and spinning come with several accent colors so guys can mix and match to their favorite rods. We have combos also in stock. These are great combos and none are on the low-end side. We’re adding a few things like water bottles and coffee mugs. We’ll soon have some really cool sun shirts in stock. We still have our original sun shirts but these are a different design and look really good.

The Josh Jones Crappie Sticks are in stock. These come in 10’, 11’, 12’, and 14’ models. These are all 2-piece rods. There’s an added hook keeper up the rod for storage. This was a Josh idea. It has the regular keeper down by the reel seat as well. The forward-facing sonar craze make these lengths a must for crappie fishing.

We have nearly all of our products in stock. We have a hole here or there but we’re in really good shape with inventory. If you don’t see what you need, call us at 903-919-8028.

It’s summertime so don’t forget the sunscreen and lip balms rated with sun protection. The sun shirts really help as well and a floppy straw hat is not a bad addition either.

Good luck fishing and, as always, we could use a special pic of your catch!! Tight lines!!!

Josh Jones Hyperlight Series Now Available

JJ Crappie.JPG

Dobyns Rods is happy to announce the new Hyperlite Series with Josh Jones. Josh and Gary are great friends and it didn’t take long when they were fishing together for Josh to convince Gary that this is something that is very much needed with the new popularity of the livescope. These longer rods let you put the bait right in front of the fish’s face as you see it on the livescope. You are no longer fishing for a school of fish but for a single fish in that school. Josh has proven to be a master with the livescope, winning numerous crappie events including the American Crappie Trail Championship in 2020. In 2020 through the start of 2022, Josh has caught 5 fish turned into the Texas ShareLunker program weighing 15.40lb, 15.10lb, 14.79lb, 14.13lb and 13.20lb!

Josh wanted a lighter, more balanced rod for this live scope technique. Most of the rods on the market are heavy and very tiring to hold all day long. The Hyperlite Series really addresses this problem making it a lighter, more sensitive and balanced rod. These will be available in the most popular lengths of 10, 11, 12 and 14 feet. These are all 2 piece casting rods but many of the crappie pros will also put small spinning reels on them.

Baton Rouge Angler Catches Bussey Brute

Hunter Hamilton2.jpg

Congratulations to Hunter Hamilton who caught the fish of a lifetime on Morehouse Parish Lake, Louisiana using his Fury Series FR 735C.

"Not long into the morning, Hamilton flipped his bait into a thick piece of brush on the 2,200 acre Morehouse Parish lake and pulled out a 12.63-pound fish of a lifetime. He was flipping a Zematoma color Missile Baits D-bomb with a Rougarou Tungsten Voodoo Series weight. He tossed the bait into the heavy cover, lifted it and let it fall. He repeated the action and the second lift, the huge fish nailed it."

"Before I knew it I felt something pulling back like I’ve never felt before,” the 17-year-old member of the Parkview Bass Team said. “I had 65-pound braid and when I set the hook, the fish didn’t even move. Oh my gosh. I thought I had a huge carp or something. Then it swam away, I could do nothing even with a heavy rod. I finally turned her. When she came up and we saw the fish’s huge mouth, my fishing partner for the day, Justin Paul Bailey (Owner of Rougarou Tackle), said it was a 10-pounder. When he lipped her a few minutes later and got her in the boat, we knew she was way bigger than that.”
