Settling in to November
Sorry this month's library newsletter is a little late, but I was away at the Wisconsin Library Association conference last week. It was a wonderful chance to see colleagues from around the state, recharge a bit, learn about the latest news and ideas in library-land, and hopefully have a chance to bring some of those ideas back to the Mercer community.

We have several fun and informative things planned for you at the library this month. We're also excited to be part of the pilot program for "Check out Wisconsin State Parks," a program that will offer free day passes to our state parks at your library. This program will be starting soon, so keep an eye out for more announcements.

See you soon at the library!

Grown-Up Story Hour at the Senior Center on November 7th

Grown-Up Story Hour is scheduled for TONIGHT, Monday, November 7 at 6:00 p.m. at the Mercer Senior Center. Grown-Up story Hour is a fun hour of stories, poetry, and essays read by members of the community. You can join in the reading or just come to listen!

Because the event is being held at the Senior Center where no food or drink service is available, the library will provide light refreshments. You are welcome to bring your own beverages and snacks or to bring something to share with the group, but it is not required.

To have a story hour, we need readers! If you are interested in reading a piece of short (5-15 minute) fiction or nonfiction, call the library at 715-476-2366 to let us know.
VOTE November 8th

Don't forget to VOTE on Tuesday, November 8th! Polls in Wisconsin are open from 7AM to 8PM. Mercer's polling place is in the Community Center connected to the library. Don't forget that you can register to vote on Election Day! If you're not sure where your polling place is or want more information about what you'll need to bring to register or to vote, visit MyVote Wisconsin.

The Friends of the Library will hold a bake sale in the library tomorrow. Stop by and grab some treats to reward yourself for voting! The bake sale will be open from 8AM until they sell out of items.

If you'd like to contribute something to the bake sale, bring your baked goods or other treats to the library any time today before 5PM or tomorrow after 8AM.
Craft Supply Swap on November 12

Time to clean out your crafting stash? Want to try something new? Swap it!

Bring any unwanted craft supplies to the library during the week of November 7-11, 2022. Come back on Saturday, November 12 at 10:00AM to grab some new-to-you supplies in our free craft swap! All kinds of craft supplies are welcome: fabric, yarn, paper, paint, brushes, drawing tools, beads, jewelry findings, artificial flowers… or anything else you can use for art or crafts.

This is an informal swap, and all are welcome to take materials even if they don't have any to donate. The library does not attempt to monitor how much people are donating or taking, and any supplies left over at the end of the event will be donated to a local resale shop. Have more questions? Give us a call at 715-476-2366.
Tech questions and classes

Need help with your smartphone, laptop, tablet, eReader, or other device? Drop-in for tech help on on select Tuesdays from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM for one-on-one help with library director Teresa Schmidt. This month, Tech Tuesday drop-ins will be on November 8 and November 22. Appointments for technology help are also still available.

We'll also hold two classes this month featuring topics that we get asked about frequently. Both classes are free, and no registration is required.

  • Monday, November 14 at 11:00AM: Tech Shopping Guide and Petting Zoo - It's holiday shopping season, so let's talk about buying technology! We'll review some popular devices on the market and look at advertisements to help you make sense of the specs and be an informed consumer. We'll also have a selection of devices on hand so you can get a look at some of the features we'll talk about.
  • Monday, November 28 at 11:00AM: Introduction to PowerPoint - Learn to use Microsoft's popular presentation software to create slides and give a presentation. We'll cover basic topics like creating slides, adding images and other media, writing presenter notes, and presenting your talk.
