Loisaida Inc. releases the Loisaida Cultural Plan and celebrates
Lower East Side History Month  with a full roster of programs & events
Loisaida Inc., started celebrating LES History Month  en grande, with a full lineup of events for the entire family, all free. The remainder of the month long programming will culminate with the 30th Annual Loisaida Festival to Celebrate Puerto Rican and Latinx culture in the Lower East Side and the indomitable spirit of our Im/migrant community. Our May programs are more than an excavation of the past or an exploration of the social, political and cultural context in which the community arts and mural movement took place. It is also a lens aimed at today's  Loisaida, focusing on how the neighborhood and the issues have changed, directing the eye to the future.

The 30th Annual Loisaida Festival
CELEBRATING THE INDOMITABLE SPIRIT OF THE IM/MIGRANT...PAST & PRESENT!

After years of cultural equity activism the New York City Council finally heard the many voices of those across the boroughs that felt marginalized with little access to the significant resources that  support the arts and cultural scene in this City.  This year, the Council will approve the City's  first-ever comprehensive  ten-year  Cultural Plan  that will overlay all aspects of policy, program, and resource allocation in  support of arts and culture going forward and across all City agencies and City funded initiatives.

Over the last six months Loisaida, Inc. and partners have been creating networks, developing strategy, and implementing its own local planning process to yield ideas and make solid recommendations.Selected by NYCT's Cultural Agenda Fund Loisaida was able to bring together hundreds of residents, community leaders of all ages, and cultural workers and artists, to finally express their opinions, observations, and fears regarding the future of Latinx and people of color on the Lower East Side and NYC.

This document offers a significant and perhaps crucial gathering of information that Loisaida, Inc. was able to garner to seize the opportunity afforded by the City's visionary effort to address the problem of cultural equity.

La Lucha Continua at First Street Green Art Park
Paying tribute to "La Lucha Continua The Struggle Continues: 1985 & 2017" with a new mural!

The first weekend of May was also kicked off with a painting extravaganza at   First Street Green Art Park for which Loisaisa Inc partnered with local organizations  Fourth Arts Block  and   Thrive Collective to develop a commemorative design of the 30 years since Artmakers gathered together 34 "artists of conviction" to create 26 political murals on four vacant buildings overlooking the then neglected La Plaza Cultural community garden. Our design process permitted those from the surrounding communities to express their own experiences and concerns, in this way hoping to amplify the voices of the community by offering up the podium, or in this case rather the paintbrush, to the people. Those interested, pass by to see the finished results and contemplate how our present may or may not revisit themes of the past.
