College and Career Wednesday: Every Wednesday KM staff members would like to spotlight a college, university, career, or apprenticeship. College and Career exploration is essential for students to create and cultivate a plan for their future. This week's College and Career Wednesday focuses on Court Reporters.

Do you have a good memory? Can you type really fast? A career as a court reporter might be a good choice.

Everything said in court needs to be recorded. Judges, lawyers, and clients may need to refer to the statements made. Of course, it is vital that the record of the words is accurate. This is where court reporters come in. They use special machines to record the statements made during legal proceedings.

Reporters' exact duties depend on the equipment they use. Many use stenotype machines to record what people say. These machines have 22 keys. Each key represents a unique sound, word, or phrase rather than a single letter. Reporters can type words and phrases much faster than they can on a regular keyboard. Using the correct keys, reporters type what they hear.

New court reporters must often complete on-the-job training. For this period, you will be supervised by an experienced reporter. As a trainee, you are taught about court procedures and legal terms. You also practice taking transcriptions. Your first tasks in court will be the most basic proceedings. You'll move up to longer, more complex cases as you gain experience.

Classes at KM that will help you prepare for a career as a Court Reporter include Communications 111, American Government and Politics, and Introduction to Business Law.
