A note from the Head of School, Ms. Maike
January 2022

Dear Mission Families,

Happy New Year! We cannot wait to spend 2022 with you and your children. Thank you to all who participated in our holiday giving initiatives last month. Ms. Wisley’s class and the Mission community supported Vista del Camino Food Bank and donated 1215 pounds of food to our local community. Your generosity is truly appreciated!

The accomplishments through the first half of the school year are amazing. Students are getting back into extra curricular activities, making huge academic strides and becoming a team in our learning community. We stand ready to finish out the school year with pride and confidence and look forward to building on all our students’ academic achievements, Mustang Code accomplishments and being kind to one another. The beginning of a new year is the perfect time to refresh—set personal goals, make meaningful decisions, or find out what is most important in our lives.

Re-enrollment will start in January and information will be sent out soon. Classroom information sessions will begin in February.

Please be sure to check our school website and read our updates on a regular basis for up-to-date information regarding re-enrollment and the application process, hot lunch, after school activities, calendar updates and regular events occurring at school.

Please remember to practice the Mustang Code with your child and other school community members. Mission Montessori is a wonderful place to come and not only learn about academics but learn that we can all peacefully get along even when our view points aren’t the same. When we practice dialog using a Socratic approach, we learn how to respectfully remain open to hearing one another.

We are truly blessed to have all of you, faculty, students and parents in our lives.

~ Ms. Maike

Middle Years Program annual STEM Fair Event
The 6th, 7th and 8th grade students worked hard on researching, experimenting and learning about how the world works. They asked a question, developed a hypothesis, advanced their research and produced a 13 page paper, all culminating with the annual STEM Fair event where parents were able to attend and judge. It was a wonderful event. We are so proud of the students.

The campus has received many new updates and enhancements over the past year. The soccer field has been seeded, new soccer nets installed, turf has been put in place all around, a brand new sport court was installed over the holiday break, a beautiful and sacred Labyrinth was crafted by Dr. Heather and her husband, Michael, new student computers purchased. We are so grateful to two of our own Mission Montessori employees, Joel and Gamma for the hard work in making the campus so beautiful.

COVID-19 Update
As we enter the new year, cases are clearly rising, and we expect that we will experience higher than normal levels of COVID-19 positivity rates. We are asking that everyone test their child prior to sending them to school on Monday and communicate with us if you or your child or anyone in your immediate household tested positive over the winter break or was exposed as a close contact.

The good news is that regular testing is working, and our efforts are helping to quickly identify and mitigate the spread of the virus in our school. Early detection is key, and we encourage anyone who hasn’t already signed up for our weekly testing to do so.

Regular testing remains a truly important tool to help identify and mitigate the spread of the virus in schools. In anticipation of heightened demand for COVID-19 testing in our school, we ask that everyone sign up for the weekly testing so we can have enough rapid tests for our entire student body.  Children that are signed up for our weekly testing, will be able to participate in our test to stay program if they are identified as close contacts.

If you have not yet signed up for testing but would like to, please go to the following link and use the access code 5AU731 below.

As we are in our second winter season and another surge of COVID-19 cases, we are grateful for the resilience of our communities and the hard work by public health professionals as we continue to work to keep kids in class and COVID out. We will continue to keep the doors and windows open throughout the day in the classrooms, so please send your children to school dressed with warm layers. We highly recommend sending your children to school in a medical grade or N95 mask during this surge in the community. If your child is experiencing any signs of illness, they need to stay home and be tested.
Healthy School Snacks and Lunches
Mission Montessori has always been a strong leader in fostering healthy eating for its students. Students begin their day early and require lots of quality energy to sustain their learning objectives. Eating fruits and vegetables for snacks throughout the day provides a stable energy base for students. This includes energy support for mood, impulse control and brain function. Many families are doing a great job packing fresh fruits and vegetables. We are seeing many very young students eating Doritos and highly processed foods for snacks, lacking fresh foods. You can involve your child in the education of preparing foods and eating healthy. There are many websites that have great information on how to efficiently pack healthy food for children.
