A Message from Mr. Vicente, Dean of Students:
“Prepare the child for the road, not the road for the child”
When working with children, we understand the importance of developing relationships that allow children to know that we are here to help them grow and learn. With that trust we can teach them to socialize well, which may help the bond to their community, family, and country. This is a great alternative to the pitfalls of social media, crime, and violence.
Choosing influence- Parents of adult children know that it is only a matter of time before they are not the most influential person in their children’s life. By high school, teens may seek peers' approval more than family members'. In their struggle for independence, they are willing to change their behavior to fit in with their peers. While they are still young, surround them with the right people and activities so that they seek that familiarity of moral people.
Unsupervised electronic devices- Unwelcome individuals that are affecting our kids, especially in the elementary grades, are the “influencers” found in social media. They are not vetted by adults, receive no parental guidance rating, and do not live with the consequences. Kids, ages 8-12, spend four to six hours watching or using screens where teens spend up to nine hours. There are numerous studies that show the risks to their health as well as social, emotional, educational development. These young minds are receptive and still in development. We have carefully and intentionally chosen what they will engage with in the classical classroom. Students are being influenced by great works of literature, the story of the world, beautiful art and music, and the joy of connecting with the world of science.
Outside play- One of our favorite activities to observe is recess. There is no structure, just ensuring they are being safe and getting the “wiggles” out. They are tumbling, racing, playing games, and socializing. Some of the most successful students I’ve met in my years are also in sports like soccer, gymnastics, karate, jiu jitsu, Girls on the Run, and so many others. These physically challenging activities give kids the opportunity to develop fortitude by working through hardship and persevering in the face of adversity. These experiences convert to moral toughness and grit which will benefit them for life.
| | April is the Month of Wisdom at ICA | |
“I WILL MAKE WELL-THOUGHT-OUT DECISIONS BEFORE ACTING.”
According to the ancient Stoics, wisdom was one of the four most important virtues, the others being justice, temperance, and courage. Wisdom encompasses both prudence, or practical wisdom, as well as such qualities as curiosity, good judgment, and the love of learning.
