LaGuardia President Kenneth Adams and Queens College President Frank H. Wu signed an agreement formalizing the partnership for Q-STEM, which enhances STEM education, creates a seamless transfer pathway between the two institutions, and provides students with holistic support both in and out of the classroom. Q-STEM launched as a pilot program in March 2022 with a $4.6 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education Hispanic-Serving Institutions STEM and Articulation Program. Q-STEM students participate in learning communities, taking classes together as a cohort structured around shared themes. “We are thrilled to partner with Queens College on the Queens STEM Academy and are grateful for the U.S. Department of Education’s support that has made this possible,” said President Adams. On April 4 from 3 to 5 p.m., Q-STEM will host a virtual workshop for students to work on resume- and cover letter-writing and interview skills; students may RSVP for the event here. | | Center for Career and Professional Development Hosts Job and Internship Fair | | Earlier today, the Center for Career and Professional Development hosted a Job and Internship Fair for students and recent grads to network with employers across the New York City area. | | | Fifteen Students Graduate from Casting Assistant Training Program | | Continuing Education partnered with Reel Works and Theatrical Teamsters Local 817 this winter to provide a Casting Assistant Training Program that prepares New Yorkers with essential skills needed to work successfully as casting assistants in the entertainment industry. The intensive 63-hour program was funded by the New York Entertainment Workforce Diversity Grant Program, Netflix, Warner Bros, Discovery and AMC Networks. Casting assistants work with casting directors and associates to source talent for television, film, theater and commercials. They assist with general office tasks including communications, scheduling and file management. They also provide support during casting sessions and screen tests by operating video cameras and/or capturing photos. All 15 students completed the program, which ran from January to March, and participated in a recent graduation ceremony at LaGuardia. “It's very rare in this industry to get an inside look at a specific niche. The program had different casting directors from the Union come in and speak to us about their experience. It felt very real and human,” said one of the program graduates. | | Updates from LaGuardia’s Library | |
