In-Person Workshop for Faculty and Staff: How are you today? Exploring Emotional Labor in Academia

On behalf of the Center for Teaching, Learning, & Leadership

Facilitator: Yvonne Montoya, Associate Prof., Communication & Information Design

Emotional labor requires that individuals manage their emotions in an effort to adequately perform their paid work. Being faculty or staff member at an academic institution is one industry that demands emotional labor. While managing emotions is an important aspect of the job, it can lead to increased stress, burnout, absenteeism, and turnover. It is important for institutions and individuals to recognize the impacts of emotional labor and develop ways to deal with this labor in beneficial ways.

NEW: Cybersecurity: Layered Security Protections

On behalf of IT: Information Security

In our increasingly digital world, robust security measures are of utmost importance, whether in personal or educational contexts. Protecting sensitive information, data, and assets is crucial. Effective security hinges on the concept of layering security measures – a multi-pronged approach for comprehensive protection against various threats.

In personal life, our devices store a wealth of sensitive information, from financial data to personal photos. Cybercriminals continuously adapt to exploit vulnerabilities. To combat this, we must employ multiple security measures. Start with strong, unique passwords and enable two-factor authentication for online accounts. Antivirus software helps defend against cyber threats. Regular software updates and patches promptly address known vulnerabilities, reducing the risk of exploitation.

Moreover, a VPN enhances online privacy by encrypting internet connections, while firewalls act as a barrier between your devices and potential threats. Combining these measures significantly boosts personal cybersecurity.

In educational settings, a vast amount of valuable information is stored digitally, making educational institutions prime targets for cyberattacks. Protecting this data is paramount, and layering security protections is equally vital.

Begin with user authentication measures to ensure that only authorized individuals access sensitive data. Implement intrusion detection systems to monitor network traffic for suspicious activity and respond swiftly to potential threats. Regular data backups are essential for quick recovery in case of a breach. Employ email filtering and web content filtering tools to prevent phishing attacks and infiltration from malicious websites.

Educational institutions should provide cybersecurity training to staff and students, teaching them to recognize and report potential threats. Cultivating a culture of cybersecurity awareness is as important as technological defenses.

Giving Grace: You Are Better at Experiential Education Than You Think You Are!

On behalf of the CSU Pueblo Center for Teaching, Learning, & Leadership (CTLL)

Most pedagogical (andragogical) models place active learning and “experiential education” at the center of high impact teaching. But many instructors, it seems, struggle to balance the requisite content they need to deliver within the inherent time “hands-on” learning activities often take.

In this session, I compare the different class approaches I’ve used, and the grace I’ve learned to give myself, while balancing time constraints, content coverage, and my desire to create the strongest learning experiences for students.

Together We Will:

Weigh the inherent strengths and challenges of different instructional methods used in our classrooms.

Design a class lesson that evaluates the essential learning for students and leverages the benefits of different active learning strategies.

Use learning from a model lesson to be able to tell a friend why we can accurately reconstruct the music of Ancient Greeks.
