Note from the Chair

By Vicky Estrada-Bustillo

Since this will be our final newsletter for this year, I want to take a moment to

thank the leadership team, for their hard work and dedication and highlight the team accomplishments since they took office in May of 2022.

The leadership team, consisting of five state-wide officers and nine regional

representatives, has dedicated the past six months to informing and growing our membership through monthly meetings, monthly newsletter, website and facebook page. Outreach materials, written both in English and Spanish, were developed and distributed. Communication and correspondence with New Mexico based organizations and Democratic Party County Chairs occurred. Leadership, as well as many of the Fuerzas Unidas Caucus membership, worked to get our Hispano Democratic candidates elected.

We recognize we have much more work to do to ensure Hispanos across New Mexico are informed, engaged and empowered. As we continue to build our organization, we look to you, our membership, to help us accomplish our mission of empowering Hispanos across New Mexico by: Informing and engaging Hispanos in rural and urban communities of New Mexico; Working together to identify and address Hispano community needs; and Supporting leaders and elected officials who advocate for Hispano priorities and policies.

May you all enjoy your holidays and time with family. Take time to rest and recharge. Then we can start back up in 2023 where we left off, to work on-behalf of our Hispano communities across New Mexico.

Fuerzas Unidas Progress Report

May-December 2022

By Vicky Estrada-Bustillo

Our Treasurer, Felice Garcia, has ensured that our organization remains in good financial standing, with up-to-date monthly financial reports and state campaign finance reports. Tracking our dues and contributions is an ongoing task. Christina Serna, our secretary has diligently worked to keep our membership list current, as well as summarizing meeting minutes for both our leadership and membership meetings. Our Vice-Chairs, Ben Salazar and Melissa Ontiveros, have worked to engage and support the regional representatives.

We have developed and distributed outreach materials (business and organizational cards), in both English and Spanish, that outline our mission statement and underlying objectives. A survey was created and sent to our membership to identify membership priority issues. We used this information to prioritize our activities and presenters for meetings.

Building our membership and improving communication within the caucus remains a priority. Various avenues to reach out to our membership were established including the monthly membership meetings, the monthly newsletter, website and facebook page, which we are updating over this holiday period.

In addition to our leadership, we are building a communications team that includes our Newsletter Editor Carlos Tenorio, Marketing specialist Lori Remillard, Website Manager Dennis Montoya, and Social Media Manager Valeria Ojeda-Avitia. Organizational outreach, based on highest priority issues identified by our membership, were initiated with various organizations as well as Democratic Party County Chairs.

Community outreach is also key to ensuring we inform and engage Hispanos throughout the state and identify and address community needs. We participated in the True Progress Real Promise community event in the South Valley of Albuquerque as well as the Sunland Park Community event. Our entire leadership team, especially our regional representatives, were active in addressing the number one issue for our membership: voter registration and Get Out the Vote efforts.

As we look to the future and our priorities for the next six months, we are

planning: Leadership Team strategic planning session; Activities that focus on priority issues identified by our membership; Outreach efforts that continue to build membership and increase the number of members involved in caucus activities; and Activities that reach out to our communities and identify and address community priority issues.
