May 16-June 5

Summer Reading Kick Off Event
Bring the whole family and join us behind the library for the Outdoor Fun Fair on Monday June 6 from 6-8 p.m. The theme this year is, Ocean of Possibilities and you'll get a preview of all the possibilities for fun at the library this summer. Families can also register for the Beanstack Summer Reading Challenge.

Take a Storybook Walk with the Miami County Parks District in front of the building. Browse and buy used children and teen books in the parking lot and then play ocean inspired games. There will also be boat races and magic from Ranger Vic. Learn about hydroponic gardening and see a watershed demonstration by the Miami Water & Soil Conservation District. The evening will conclude with a musical performance about sea animals by local educator and naturalist, Chris Rowland at 7:00 p.m.

The library summer program is supported in part by the Federal Institute of Museum and Library Services Funds, granted through the State Library of Ohio.

Undesign the Redline Exhibit
April 11- June 15

Undesign the Redline is an important, visually compelling exhibit that traces the tangled roots of governmental policies to the social issues we face today. Undesign the Redline ignites discussion about race, wealth, opportunity, and power, with the goal of transforming the future.

Why are communities like Dayton so often racially segregated? How did our neighborhoods form the way they did? How does this affect employment, education, policing, health care, and other aspects of life?

This exhibit is open to the public during normal library operating hours.

Please contact the library to plan your organization’s visit to the exhibit.

What is Redlining?

Redlining maps were introduced in the 1930s to show risk areas for federal funding of home ownership programs. These maps showed areas that were prime for investment, and areas where no money would be lent. The neighborhoods where no investment would be made were outlined in red, literally, “redlined.”

To schedule a docent guided tour for your group or organization, contact the library at 937-667-3826 or stop in anytime from April 11-June 15 during normal operating hours for a self-guided experience.

TCPL will be hosting a panel discussion on the Undesign the Redline Exhibit. See details in the adult programming section.

Events Planned for the Whole Family
Get Ready for the Summer Library Club
It’s that time of year again- time for the Summer Beanstack Challenge and special programming at the library for all ages. This summer our theme is “Oceans of Possibilities”, and we’ll learn about water conservation, sea animals, beaches, lakes, water transportation, and SHARKS!

If you have participated in our Beanstack reading challenges previously, you’ll simply log into your account on the mobile app or on a computer and update the ages of family members who are participating this summer.

If you’re new to our summer challenge, go to the library website to learn how to set up a Beanstack account for your family. Click here for the link. The actual challenge will not begin until June 1, but you can register now and familiarize yourself with the Beanstack software we use to log reading and participation in library activities for points. Library staff is also available to guide you through the process during regular library hours.

Remember, the more you read and participate in library activities, the more points you earn. Your points get you virtual badges and prizes through July 31. This year elementary children will be reading and beading. Their points will earn them brag tags and bead to add to a chain necklace or bracelet. Wear your brag tags proudly this summer to show everyone your summer challenge accomplishments.

More information and dates of the June programs can be found on our website under the PROGRAMS tab and in the next newsletter.
Creative Corner
This month in the creative corner, we are inviting kids to take part in our tapestry weaving station. Little ones will learn a new skill and have fun while doing it.
Upcoming Programs for 6th-12th Grade Youth
The Tipp City Library Needs You!
Tipp City Public Library is looking for volunteers to help with the Summer Library Program from June 1 to July 30. It’s a great work environment- air conditioning, casual dress, fun people, variety, and no stress! We prefer volunteers who are comfortable working around children, follow directions well, and catch on to new things easily. You must have completed 6th grade by June 1 and be at least 12 years old. Volunteers are asked to help out at least 2 days a week for at least 2 hours a day. The volunteer application has more details on the days and hours we need help. Fill in the VOLUNTEER APPLICATION FORM here or go to the library website and access the form on the “Teen Programs” tab. The last day to submit an application is May 28. There will be a Volunteer Round-up on May 28 from 10:30 AM-12:30 PM. Miss Heidi will be available at this time in the Teen Den to ask questions or email her anytime at: hthiele@tippcitylibrary.org
