SLA is pleased to once again be offering program grants for Family Literacy Day!

Family Literacy Day takes place each year on January 27 to raise awareness about the importance of reading and family literacy. These $200 grants are available to SLA’s individual or institutional members to support them as they celebrate and promote Family Literacy Day. The 2024 theme for Family Literacy Day is “Let’s have a family party!”

Grant applications are now open, and will close on Nov. 30, 2023. Applications will be assessed on how well the program aligns with the theme of fostering family literacy.

SLA Seeking Presenters for 2024 Conference

SLA is now accepting session proposals for the 2024 Saskatchewan Libraries Conference.

Are you knowledgeable in an area that your colleagues are always asking you about? Do you know how to run a great program? Have you found a solution to a unique library problem? We want to hear your expertise!

The theme for this year's conference is "Libraries Create Community," inviting us to explore the many ways that libraries build, enhance, and empower their communities. Some of the ways that the SLA Conference Program Committee sees libraries creating community are:

  • Developing library collections or services that reflect and support our province’s diverse communities;
  • Creating relevant communities of practice for library workers;
  • Library students sharing research projects with the broader library community;
  • Providing instruction to create information-literate citizens in our communities; and,
  • Gathering community in reconciliation and decolonization initiatives.

Have an idea for a presentation? We’d love to hear from you! The deadline to submit your session proposal is Nov. 17, 2023.

The 2024 Saskatchewan Libraries Conference will take place May 1-3, 2024 at the DoubleTree Hotel in Regina. All conference sessions will be held in-person at the conference venue. Submissions from within Saskatchewan and outside the province are welcome.

Thank You to Everyone for Participating in SLW!

Saskatchewan Library Week was a huge success this year! Thank you to everyone who participated and/or helped their library participate in some way. It was amazing to see all the social media posts and all the chatter about libraries happening across the province during that week.

SLA also wants to give a big thank you to the Saskatchewan Roughrider Foundation for partnering with us to put on the Get in the Game for Literacy Success Contest this year! We received many entries, and it was great to see so many people combine their Rider pride with their love of libraries.

This collage of four photos shows Gainer the Gopher interacting with patrons and staff during his stop at Regina Public Library's Sunrise Branch.

As part of this partnership, Gainer the Gopher made two library visits to the Regina Public Library's Sunrise and Sherwood Village branches. Thank you to all the library staff who helped put on those events.

We are also excited to announce the winners of the Get in the Game for Literacy Success Contest!

Sisters Olivia and Ember McLeod and the Klein family won Family Packs, and Kendra Dumont won an autographed football. Thank you to the Saskatchewan Roughrider Foundation for generously donating our contest prizes.

Indigenous Subject Headings Now Available

The Saskatchewan Indigenous Subject Headings Project has the aim of modernizing terms in library catalogues related to Indigenous Peoples in Saskatchewan. This project is a response to the Canadian Federation of Library Associations-Fédération canadienne des associations de bibliothèques call to action 5 that “libraries should strive to decolonize access and classification” and is led by the Multitype Library Board for Saskatchewan libraries.

The Saskatchewan Indigenous Subject Headings are now available online at https://mlb.libguides.com/SK_ISH

The Multitype Library Board extends its thanks to the many Indigenous community members and library staff who shared their expertise, insight and dedication in supporting this project, as part of a shared journey toward reconciliation. It also thanks the Outreach and Technical Advisory Groups, composed of Saskatchewan library sector staff, for their work on this project.

The Multitype Library Board is hosting a free webinar to share more technical information about the project. The webinar will be held on Dec. 6, 2023 at 2pm. Click here to register for the webinar.

James Hope Howard has light brown hair pulled back into a ponytail and a short beard. He has black-framed glasses and is wearing a grey collared shirt with a tie and a black sweater vest over top.

Hello everyone,

I hope that you all had a fantastic Saskatchewan Library Week, as well as a very Happy Halloween. My costume once again this year was “chilly-looking guy handing out candy”, and if you’ll humour me a bit of immodesty, I think I crushed it pretty hard this year. I looked so lifelike!

Before we put October behind us and look to the months to come, congratulations to the winners of our inaugural Get in the Game for Literary Success Contest! You’ll find the names of our three lucky winners listed above in this month’s issue of SLAte, and I want to once again extend our thanks to the Saskatchewan Roughrider Foundation for their contest partnership, participation and prizes.

We’ve now flipped the calendar into November, and November means planning for the next Saskatchewan Libraries Conference. If you have an idea for a session that would be great at our 2024 conference – a program that you’ve found success with, a problem you’ve found a solution to, a topic you’ve been diving deep into – we’d love to hear from you! Our session proposal deadline is Nov. 17, 2023, and our slate of sessions filled up very quickly last year, so be sure to submit your proposal in a timely fashion if you are interested in presenting.

Next year’s conference will take place May 1–3 at the DoubleTree Hotel in Regina, and I know that I for one will be looking forward to it with great anticipation as the weather outside gets more and more dreadful. I promise you spring will be here before we know it!

Until next time,

James Hope Howard

SLA President

CFLA Copyright Committee Update

At the October 2023 meeting, the CFLA Copyright Committee discussed the following:

  • CICan (Colleges & Institutes of Canada) is ramping up their advocacy efforts regarding copyright in the college sector. In particular they will be releasing a new copyright primer for colleges and institutes.
  • The Crown Copyright Working Group is sending their latest draft of Crown Copyright Code of Best Practices for initial legal review.
  • Artificial Intelligence and Copyright Working Group will be presenting at the OLA Copyright Symposium on Dec. 7 and is also preparing a submission to the Federal Government's recently announced Consultation on Copyright in the Age of Generative Artificial Intelligence.
  • The Accessibility Working Group is incorporating stakeholder feedback into a revised draft of the Reasonable Search Guidelines and will send the Guidelines to the Canadian Coalition For Inclusive Publishing for further review and comment.
  • The E-book Collaboration umbrella group is studying assessments of provincial legislation regarding definitions of "consumer" in consumer protection legislation to determine which provinces' definition of consumer would include libraries as part of determining next steps in e-book licence advocacy. The umbrella group is also looking at the Competition Bureau review as a possible avenue for advocacy.
  • The PLR (Public Lending Right) Working Group is finalizing membership to include individuals from Canadian public libraries. The Working Group will develop a position statement on the PLR along with background information and references on PLR.

At the September 2023 meeting, the CFLA Copyright Committee discussed the following:

  • Victoria Owen from the CFLA copyright committee was a guest of the Michael Geist podcast to discuss the CFLA statement Don’t Blame Copyright for Declining Revenue. It Won’t Help Authors.
  • Crown Copyright Code of Best Practices continues its work. Watch for calls for peer reviewers later this year.
  • CFLA CDL working group's work was presented at IFLA as a way for regional bodies to address CDL in their jurisdictions.
  • Making Works Accessible document created by accessibility coalition is nearing completion. This also will address Reasonable Search Guidance.
  • E-book collaboration umbrella group has engaged a research assistant to analyze provincial competition legislation to evaluate opportunities to make the changes suggested with the Ontario legislative proposal. This will be combined with the political assessment of provincial openness being compiled by TSA to recommend which provinces should be approached. The group will also discuss opportunities in the upcoming Competition Act Review to assess if there are appropriate areas for discussion.
  • OLA Copyright Symposium will be on the afternoons (ET) of December 7 and 8. Dec. 7 will be about AI and copyright and Dec 8 will focus on contract over-ride
  • Public Lending Right (PLR) Working Group is beginning its work on developing a statement on the public lending right in Canada.
  • Members from CFLA will be participating in a WIPO side session on Marakesh Treaty as part of a CARL - ARL working group. This will hopefully encourage more States to accede to the Treaty.
