Dr. Barbara Tarkin, Forman School’s Clinical Psychologist, recently shared the importance of taking care of one’s mental health and wellbeing during the cold winter months. Here are some of the tips she shared to beat the winter blues:
- Practice good self-care in terms of adequate sleep, good nutrition (follow the 80/20 rule, 80% healthy eating and 20% not so healthy), regular exercise, and hydration.
- To boost your mental health, try practicing mindfulness/meditation daily.
- Think of three things you are grateful for every day. Let the people you are thankful for hear that from you.
- Do something for someone else. Helping others boosts our mental health.
- Spend 30 minutes outside among trees to boost your mental health, as well as your immune system.

Photography Challenge
Students on campus and at home were invited to participate in a Quarantine Photography Challenge following the winter break. The challenge’s theme, We Are Here, encouraged students to capture a photo of the spaces they were in during quarantine, such as their dorm room, their home, or the outdoors. It also prompted them to be creative and take photos with different angles and perspectives. Congratulations to the following winners: Doug Baker ‘22, Max Halpern ’24, AJ Jimeno ’24, Julian Schnitt ’23, and Andrew Specter ’23. Click here to see the winning photos. These students won a gift certificate from the school store.

Broomball
The ice rink is back this winter in front of the Henderson Administrative Building. Students and faculty faced off during the season’s first broomball tournament this week. The game ended in a tie in three-minute overtime. “What I love so much about broomball is that everyone is together, everyone is having fun, smiling, and being happy,” says Henry White ’22.
