The Government of Canada has established September 30th as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The Atlantic Chamber of Commerce encourages members and business to join us in reflection and honouring residential school survivors, and promoting good relationships and economic reconciliation with Indigenous peoples in a manner that best fits your organization.

Canada’s 44th General Election was held on September 20, 2021, and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will return with a new mandate in a minority parliament.

During the election period, the Atlantic Chamber surveyed our Atlantic IMPRESSIONS insight community from August 19 - 26, 2021 and members identified their key priorities for Government. The top five priorities for business are the following:

Local Governance Public Consultation Document Released
|
|
The Government of New Brunswick has released a “what we heard” document summarizing themes from feedback obtained during the local governance reform engagement process. The Government notes in the document that the status quo is no longer an option and local government must be modernized. This could have significant impacts on communities with larger local governments, as there will be more services provided, but which could increase in the cost of living and of doing business as result.

New Brunswick Introduces New Restrictions
|
|
The provincial government announced that beginning Tuesday, Sept. 21 at 11:59 p.m., people will be required to show proof of vaccination when accessing certain events, services and businesses, and anyone entering New Brunswick must preregister their travel.

Atlantic Chamber Outlines Priorities to Premier Houston

|
The Atlantic Chamber of Commerce has sent a congratulatory letter to Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston. In the letter, the Chamber has outlined key priorities identified by members for the attention of the new premier. These priorities include having a modernized tax system, investing in economic development, population growth, and others that can be viewed by clicking here.

Phase 5 of Nova Scotia’s Reopening Plan Has Been Delayed Until October 4, 2021

Starting October 4, 2021, people who are 12 years of age and older will need to provide proof of full vaccination to participate in most events and activities that bring groups of people together.

Start-up Businesses Can Apply to Ignition Fund

Applications are now open for Innovation PEI’s 2021 Ignition Fund competition, which offers up to $25,000 to launch or expand a business in Prince Edward Island.
The Ignition Fund is a competitive based fund for entrepreneurs seeking start-up capital for a new innovative business venture or to develop and launch a new innovative product. Applicants must be committed to establishing and operating a new business in this province. Projects will be judged on their innovation and potential economic impact for Prince Edward Island.

This year the debate that will be held from October 27 – 28, 2021 and there are six resolutions coming out of Atlantic Canada in support of business in Atlantic Canada:
