Did you know that one in 40 Ashkenazi Jewish women have the BRCA1/2 mutation? Neither did we until last night’s seminar, It’s All in the Genes: BRCA, Breast Cancer, and You, hosted by the Paperny Family JCC in partnership with Calgary Jewish Federation and Beth Tzedec Congregation, moderated by Emerging Gen Coordinator, Hannah Giesinger. Guest geneticist Dr. Carey Johnson educated attendees on the role genetics play in breast cancer as well as testing protocols and prevention. Community member, Sandy Kogut, shared the story of her journey with cancer and advocated for the Jewish agency of Sharsheret. Guests also watched a short video of testimony from cancer survivors from across the country before panel speakers fielded questions from the audience. Thank you to our speakers and video participants for making this event so impactful.

Yasher Koach to The Calgary Jewish Academy (CJA) student, Samara Yanofsky, who dedicated her Bat Mitzvah project to the inclusion of people with disabilities. Samara gave an engaging presentation to the grade 7 class at CJA about autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and inclusion. We would like to express our gratitude to Jessica Rynn for supporting Samara. For more information on how to bring inclusion initiatives and programs to your school, shul, or organization, contact Calgary Jewish Federation's Inclusion Manager, Karina Szulc.
