Some went down to the sea in ships,
doing business on the mighty waters;
they saw the deeds of the Lord,
his wondrous works in the deep.
Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
for his wonderful works to humankind.
Psalm 107:23-24-31
|
There are very few verses in the Bible which speak positively of the sea. Of course, we know the story of Noah surviving on the ark through forty days and nights of rain, and the year that followed waiting for the waters of the flood to recede. The prophet Jonah was thrown overboard from his ship sailing away from Nineveh and then eaten by a giant fish. Jesus walked on the waters of the Sea of Galilee and rose from the stern of a fishing boat to calm a stormy sea. In Revelation, the last book of the Bible, we read that when Christ returns the sea will be no more. I am not sure why the seas have such gotten such bad press in scripture. They certainly do separate us, but they have also historically been the great highways for commerce.
As a result of the global pandemic, international shipping has slowed dramatically. Port facilities have been closed, dock workers have been unable to offload containers and truckers have been unable to transport them to distribution centers further in land. It is odd to believe that our three bronze bells forged in France would be affected by such an aftershock of the pandemic, but so they have. With any luck, the container ship the Potomac Express carrying the bells will arrive soon in Charleston, South Carolina, and the bells will travel to Lakes of the Isles for worship on Sunday, October 10TH. (Please keep track of any additional messages that come from the church this week.)
Many of the special events scheduled in the month of October are intended to celebrate God’s faithfulness and for the blessings we have experienced and enjoyed through this past year a half. We are certainly not through with the pandemic, and almost daily we read or hear of new breakthrough cases, but vaccinations still remain our best defense and have allowed us to gather in person again. For that I am truly grateful.
Over the next few weeks, please meditate on the words of Martin Rinkart that they may become your own.
Now thank we all our God with heart and hands and voices,
who wondrous things has done, in whom his world rejoices;
who from our mothers' arms has blessed us on our way
with countless gifts of love, and still is ours today.
Peace, Pastor Arden Haug

St. Francis & The Blessing of the Animals,
October 3RD, 10:45 AM
|
|
October 4TH is the calendar date designated for the commemoration of the Feast of St. Francis. At Lake of the Isles, we traditionally mark the first Sunday of October as a festival of his prayers, hymns and teaching. This date is always complicated by the running of the Twin Cities Marathon. Francis will be celebrated both in music in the 9:30 Sunday morning worship service and outside at 10:45 after the service in our own rite of the Blessing of the Animals. As in years past, the blessing is offered to live animals as well as plush toys. Refreshments will be available as well.
The Twin Cities Marathon posts that the organizers anticipate the Mile 2 roadblock on Hennepin Avenue will be lifted at 9:00, Mile 3 at Oliver Ave. S at 9:15, and Mile 4 at Dean Parkway at 9:30.

Please plan to attend the annual fall fundraiser on Sunday, October 10th, 5:00 PM at the home of Bernie & Michelle Reisberg. Due to great generosity of the congregation throughout this past year, the focus of this event is fun and not just funds. A number of building projects have already been completed for this year. The one remaining goal is to raise the funds for the restoration of the stained-glass window above the balcony of Jesus the Good Shepherd. Michelle McCreery will be serving a meal with a minimal suggested donation. Susanne Haas will be organizing a silent auction, so if you have an item that you would like to offer, please contact the church office. We are only hoping to have 15 items for the auction.
Aleks Knezevich will provide musical entertainment during the program.
Participants have the option to dine in, (some outdoor seating) or take away.

Confirmation Sunday
October 31ST
|
|
In many Lutheran churches the Confirmation worship service is known as the Affirmation of Baptism. The name recalls the promises that were made by the parents and godparents at the time of a child’s baptism. They vowed that the Christian faith would be the child’s one day, and that they would speak on behalf of the child until that day comes. The Rite of Affirmation is that coming of age for the young adult. It is also a day for a renewal of the faith through the laying on of hands and the giving of the Holy Spirit. On Reformation Sunday, October 31ST we will celebrate confirmation with Ben Mechels.

Heart of Europe Tour Revisited
April 25 - May 7, 2022
Hungary, Slovakia, Austria & Czech Republic
|
|
Of course, none of us knows what the fall will bring to European travel, and it never hurts to dream. But just in case, Pastor Haug is planning on a possible springtime trip to the Heart of Europe in 2022. The tour will visit many of the great cities along the Moldau and Danube Rivers, Budapest, Bratislava, Vienna, Salzburg, Cesky Krumlov & Prague. Unfortunately, the Oberammergau Passion Play will not be a part of this trip. More information will be available in the coming weeks.
