STARS Basics

Family child care programs are an important option for many Kentucky families as they consider opportunities for quality care. The state's STARS Quality Rating System provides standards and incentives to help child care providers achieve higher quality.

Many parents prefer the warm, home-like setting and flexible hours family child care offers. As parents look for child care, they will also take note of those areas where each provider excels and creates a nurturing, safe, and educational environment. The STARS system gives families an easy way to search for and identify quality providers.

STARS standards reflect many areas of quality care, including:

  • Learning activities tailored for each child's age and developmental level
  • A variety of toys, books, and materials to stimulate young minds
  • Warm, nurturing interactions between provider and children
  • Regular communication with parents
  • Ongoing professional development for the provider
  • Appropriate health, safety, and nutrition practices

The STARS scale begins at level 1, and there are family child care providers who have achieved levels 4 and 5! Even a move to level 2 shows a commitment to quality. When available, grants and other opportunities can assist providers with funds dedicated to continuing/improving quality care.

Family Child Care Homes play a crucial role in preparing Kentucky’s children for success in school and life. Quality care during early childhood follows children into kindergarten and beyond. For more information about increasing your STARS level, contact your Family Child Care Specialist!

Social Emotional Activity Center

Social and emotional learning in early childhood looks a lot like play.  Taking turns is a vital social skill that is important for developing positive interactions with peers. Taking turns initiates an acknowledgement of the emotions of others.  The link below highlights games and activities to practice taking turns and developing the social skills of young learners.

FREE TRAINING

The Family Child Care Network will be offering a 4-part training series focusing on strengthening business practices. The purpose of this training is to strengthen childcare providers’ foundational knowledge of fiscal terms, concepts, and practices. It encourages providers to realize the importance of financial planning to the sustainability of their business. It provides tips and best practices to help break down fiscal processes into manageable steps.

This training is intended to be one part of the learning process to build providers’ understanding of good business practices.

Whenever possible, it is recommended that this training be supplemented with technical assistance and ongoing peer-to-peer sharing opportunities such as communities of practice. During this training, you will be introduced to financial reports that can help you better manage your center’s finances. We will also be helping you understand the concept of internal controls and how they can strengthen your program's fiscal health.
