Dear Friends,
This coming Sunday, All Saints Sunday, is one of my favorite and most difficult Sundays of the year. The difficulty comes with the grief that may be quite raw as we remember the loved ones who have died in the past few months. But right alongside our very real sadness, there is so much hope and so much love.
Through my time here as your pastor I have heard so many stories of the saints of Maplewood UMC; stories of folks who gave so much of themselves to this church, because this faith community was important to them:
-
· Al, who sat in a chair in the back corner of the sanctuary in a chair rather than a pew, so he was sure to see and greet any latecomers.
-
· Emmitt, who was THE ONLY usher and greeter for such a long time, until his legs were too tired, and he just wanted to sit with his wife, Velma.
-
· Milmo, Jerry Blackwell’s mother, who I never had the honor to meet, but instead know by the apron that is framed and kept at the church, a gift to her from the MUMC Kids at that time.
-
· Ryan, who made the amazing star that has shone over worship services several times during Advent.
There are too many stories to tell and saints to name in this letter. Some I have met. Some I hope to meet on the other side.
What makes these folks saints and what makes us saints is God’s call and God’s grace. We become God’s saints, or “holy ones” as we say “Yes” to the call of God’s grace which we experience through Jesus. We become saints by God’s grace alone.
It seems to me, what makes our sainthood more notable to others is how we live into the call of God upon our lives. What legacy do we leave? What blessings that have been bestowed upon us do we release back into the world as a response of gratitude to God and care for the world.
This week, I hope you spend some time remembering the saints in your lives. Maybe mention to your friends that this Sunday we celebrate All Saints Day at church and share your stories about the saints you know and have known. Celebrate the blessings they shared that made their sainthood noteworthy to you. Recall the moments they helped you exercise your patience with humor and grace. Remember and cling to the hope that in Jesus, the Christ, our communion with them continues even after this they have departed from this life.
I look forward to worshiping with you on this special Sunday in the life of the church.
God’s grace and peace be with you,
Pastor Kim

Advent Decoration Assistance Needed!
During Advent and Christmas we will celebrate the gift of being present—God’s gift of being present with us as Jesus, and the gift that we can give to God and others by being truly present for them.
What better image to use for Advent decorations than “presents”!
Would you be wiling to wrap some 2 x 2 x 2 inch blocks with fabric? The blocks, fabric and ribbon will be provided and available to pick up this Sunday. If possible, we ask that you provide your own pins to hold the fabric in place.
If you are willing to wrap a few blocks—even 6 or 7 will help A LOT!—please find Barb on Sunday. OR email Barb Stanford at partymom19@gmail.com by Saturday so everything will be ready for you on Sunday. Thank you!!
